Crank walk, is this only an EVO problem?

All the oily, spinning bits

Very few "crank-walk" was due to a poor design.

Mitsu...is HUGE! Remember WWII? The "Zeros" plane?

See the movie: "Too Big To Fail". Mitsu was there, to maybe...bail-out a failing bank. :? (they walked away  )

More often...it is due to NEGLECT.

As in: failure to pull your oil dipstick, before...doing a drift or "donuts", etc. etc.

The ACT instructions...USED to have warning about super, HD clutches...
for a lil' while, then they removed that BS, cause it just ain't so!

However, ACT still says: "rebuild/replace your hydraulics...FIRST!"

Review this: http://starquest.i-x.net/viewtopic.php?t=980

Again...it's all-about STARVING your engine of LUBRICATION, most often!

A senior member, at i-x....was doing "donuts" for shits & grins, and spun the
#4 rod bearing. He then, checked his dipstick. It was quit LOW!

The thrust bearing, in a 2.6, gets oil BEFORE it goes to #4 rod bearing...
where it is, DEAD LAST, to be oiled. :(

And, turbocharged engines, are gonna eat a lil' oil....ANYWAY!

TIP: you buy gasoline...PULL YOUR DIPSTICK....NOW!

Psst, what about a slow oil leak, that wasn't there, the day before?

Btw, ANY Starquest, can do "donuts", so I'm never impressed by ANY
vehicle, driving like a momo!

Well, ahhh... I own a nasty lil' 87 Conquest, 105K miles, high compression,
flat top, forged pistons, mech-cam, ported head, new 19C turbo...
EVERYTHING, new or rebuilt, KYBs, 88 trans & 6 bolt rear axle...blah, blah, blah,
(see the SOS)

However, I'm more into V-8s of old...and the newest, V-8 engines.

Cough, cough, my older brother just moved here. Last week, he drives
a 2013 Shelby GT500 up my driveway..."I just had it order-in, I bought it
620hp?". :x

My brother's new car in 1967:

I also, have spoiled myself with HP, V-8s, since I was 16 years old!

Honestly...I feel stupid, about 4 cylinder engines. I know the 2.6,
inside & out!

And, I left the state of Illinois, cause they revoked my DL, for too many tickets,
hence I moved to NM. 8) They didn't have computers in 1975.

Ultimately, Illinois decided to lift my ban (I was merely a kid  ) so that
is a history by 1997. 8)

I still have my, Need-For-Speed moments, But I'm out-there, all by myself.
I have a clean DL report...knock-on-wood!

Tip: When a cop, pulls you over...place your keys, on the roof!
Cops, see that, as a sign-of-respect! :D With a clean DL report, MOST
will just warn you, and not ticket you!

My son taught me that. :? It worked, everytime! 8)

Hell, once I was doing bout 120mph, and I told the cop,
"Some maniac was chasing me, real nasty type..."
He bought the BS story...NO TICKET!

Yes, I rueled the streets...South Eubank Blvd, SE, Albuquerque, NM. 75-76-77-78...
351 Clevelands are very nasty, in deed!

Crankwalk isn't as common as people made it out to be. 97+ 7 bolts had the revised thrust bearings. Disable the neutral safety switch, so you don't need to push the clutch in to fire it up, it will help prevent unnecessary load on the thrust bearing, which can lead to bearing failure/crankwalk.

A shorter answer: 88 Starquest had a "recall", to replace the rod bearings.

I could only suppose, the ANY EVO, would have done the same...or at
least issue a "TSB" over a factory fault.

Remember, there is a , left-foot rest pad, built into a Starquest.

Message is: Remove your left foot from the clutch pedal unless you are stroking
the pedal.

That is, an old habit-of-mine, of any stickshift, I have driven. 8)

Even though I said it's not too common, because in most cases you reach over an average amount of miles and bearings haven't failed, you should be good. The 7 bolts that were known for problems over here in the states were, '95-96 blocks. 97 autos had revised thrust bearings, 98+ had all revised thrust bearings. So yeah after looking up Evo4 production years, could happen. Best thing to do is rebuild it and your new parts will already be the revised bearings :).

For anyone that has not read the magnus motorsports "crankwalk theory" its very interesting. In fact to me, its more logical that the age old dsm "myths" of the crank was machined wrong from the factory, you need these alignment dowels, ect. ect...

 I read about half of it...before it bored me to tears.

I BUILD RACE CARS! Do you...install a RED LIGHT WARNING
to report LOW OIL PRESSURE, like *I* always do? How bout
a alarm buzzer?

Right, red bulb reports oil pressure below 5psi.
A buzzer could also have been installed...but I don't drift my Conquest.

Factory gauge plus the VDO and red light warning.

YOU...NONE OF YOU, can control a race car and observe your own gauges
at the same time! (I can't either)

FWD vehicles.... where has your oil pressure gone, as you spin your ass around? YOU DON'T HAVE A CLUE!

Image

Drifting is a DANCE, between two cars! Not much room for a FAULT, now is there!

RWD has ALWAYS RULED!

Far too much invested...to destroy a perfectly good engine! 8)

But yep... we have totaled about a 1/2 dozen of them! (the bodys)

I still think...that a large amount of blame is due to,
DRIVER'S INATTENTION!

Come on downnnnn....and ride with me!

Mitsu-Mech wrote:It's a common problem on Evo 1-4 with earlier thrust bearing design. Is this eliminated or reduced beyond measure when the 4g63 is used in a push pressure plate configuration instead of the Evo's pull type pressure plate?

Here's the most commonly used "cure" for it on the MLR http://www.lancerregister.com/showpost. ... stcount=22

I've searched the PZG forums and have seen no mention of thrust bearing concerns.
That link is about 9 years old.

Clever ideas in the above link. But drilling micro, holes might be even better.

Orrrr, you make a gutter, in the bearing to carry more oil to the thrust.

My answer remains the same. 8)

Did ya know that Ford 292/312 V8 starved the rocker arms and
I developed a system to correct that? 8)

Ford 351C pumped too much oil to the lifters. Moroso sells
a restricter plug to control that. I use them in my 460s, too.

If there isn't enough oil, going to a particular, then rerouting the oil
flow thru a larger hole is usually the cure.

Yes, you would need to teardown the engine to make proper mods.

I'm not convinced that Mitsu was the culprit.

Maybe...MAYBE, if your engine failed, you'd pull your dipstick
a lil' more often? Just sayn. 8)

Btw...nice pics of that, cut-up-engine. Did anybody increase the diameter
of the oil supply hole?
