I've read so much I am starting to get confused. Do the 1G DSM's ('89 to '94) come with either 6 bolt or 7 bolt cranks. If so, which years have which.
ie if I get a '93 DSM, could it have a 7 bolt crank?
if i do end up with a 7 bolt, can I use the 2.0 D50 transmission with a 7 bolt, and if so which flywheel do I need and does it need to be machined in any way?
sorry for the confusion

speaking of main caps.... the 1G turbo mains are linked together 1-2 3 4-5... the 2G has them all linked with a girdle 1-2-3-4-5... the 2.6, 2.4, non turbos(I think) are not linked together at all. Wonder how that will do....

Getting the engine bolted in is about 10% of the way there.
The next 80% can go quickly with help and skill.
That last 10% takes about as long as the 90% that came before it.

just thought that would be better then, "do not get the 7 bolt"... that gives explicit reasons...
no, i really appreciate the answer, that is exactly what I was looking for thanks

6bolt came in 89-mid year 92 from then on went to 7bolt but 92-94 7bolts are different they dont crank walk as much in actuality all 4g63 crank walk (ive had 2 bolts that walked) just stay away from 95-99 motors they are the worst not only with crank walk they also spin bearings like nobodys business

Ah, but the 92-95 small 7 bolters have swapable parts with the 6 bolt parts... When they redesigned a good thing they made it worse...
and what has a 2 bolt? the bolt # refers to the crank/flywheel number of bolt holes...
All the '63, '64 have 2 bolt main caps... but that is not the issue...
While some of the 2G's have a girdle... but still we were talking about why not to go with a certain 7 bolt motors.
Any motor can spin a bearing... if you have a motor that is known for it you can take alot of steps to prevent it...
ok well many have tried to prevent crankwalk in the 95-99 motors no one has done it yet
the heads from all years are interchangeable with slight modifacations like reeming the head bolt holes the heads from the later 7bolts 95-99 are actually the ideal head they are the raised runner head but require a ton of porting to make it flow
to determin the difference between a 6bolt and a 7bolt you could either count the bolts for the flywheel or look at the oil pans by the crank pulley the oil pan is flat on a 6bolt and on the 7 bolt there is a slight hump
ive never heard anyone refer to any of the motors as a 2bolt only heard that with chevey 350's
also the 95-99 motors came with a windage tray where pre95 6 bolt or 7 bolts didnt have one
