D50 question!?

Post by miniblue89 »

I am in need of a new engine in my 89 d-50....I have read all about the 4g63t swap and everything but I am still kinda fuzzy on it all.....I have a 2.0 widebody 4g63b in my truck right now and I want to get a new motor to bolt up into it and everythign...I know I will haev to move it up 3 inches but I can do that no problem.....what I also want to know is my tranny is an auto tranny that came stock with it.....how will my tranny hold up to the engine I put in it....I know if the turbo is too big it wont hold up at all.......what are some ideas of what I can do?????? any help would be awesome!!!!! Thanks alot...

It's going to be hard to find a 2.0L turbo wideblock that you can just bolt up. If your block is still good you could get a donor 2.0L narrowblock engine and swap everything over to it, put in some fresh rings or something. Freshen that baby up. Run a stock turbo and ECU. It could be fun and the transmission wont totally hate you (but still dont expect it to last forever).

Getting the engine bolted in is about 10% of the way there.
The next 80% can go quickly with help and skill.
That last 10% takes about as long as the 90% that came before it.

I believe my block is good....it smokes cuz the rings are bad but it doesnt knock or anything and it isnt blown.....I was told it would be hard so I am going to get a g63t and put it all on my block and go with it....would I have to get just the rings or a whole engine rebuild kit just to be safe????? Thanks fo rthe reply.

Maybe you could get a 2G head without a sensor on the back and do some modifications so the water outlet is on the front. With these modifications you should be able to keep the engine in the stock location. Might need some brake booster mods too.

Get the whole rebuild kit, you'll need it. You might consider getting some new rings and honing the cylinder bores. It would be good to disassemble EVERYTHING.. every oil gallery plug, the entire oil pump, oil pressure regulator and inspect them for wear. Pack the oil pump with grease when you reassemble it to make priming much easier.. get it all cleaned up and painted too.

This thread might be dead, but a friend of mine is doing this using the stock motor mounts (in a D50). The CAS has plenty of room and just like my car he is watering out of the front of the head, with one exception. He took two toyota thermostat outlets and bolted them together so he could run a thermostat. Then he welded it to the head. I have been driving my stuff for about 2 years with an aluminum tube welded to the front of the head with no problems at all. We made a flat plate rear thermostat cover to mount the ECU temp sensor in the stock location so it would read as intended.

Here is a photo of his set up:

Do you have any better pics? This one is kinda small and it doesn't show much other than the thermostat housing on the front of the head.

I think those things do pretty well untill you lean on them to much. If anyone has the desire to make it work it is Dirtboy.

i know i heard you have full slicks. tlk to some of the other guys that have the same setup as you. they had to go to a full 4 link setup to get it to hook and even then they needed weight in the rear.

It dosent have slicks, and I doubt anyone else has tried what he is trying. I guess the proof will be in the pudding though, and I am looking forward the the reaction the thing will get. It should make a few people scratch thier heads.
