evo 8 turbo question

Post by turbotsi »

Ok, so I have an 88 starion and I'm currently building a 4g64 DOHC swap for it and I have a killer deal on an evo 8 turbo. Question is, are there any special things or mods needed to mount the turbo. I've searched and can't find any info. It seems pretty straight forward, turbo, manifold and mount. but I just want to check with people with a little more experience with these cars... Thanks in advanve

you're getting a killer deal because that turbo spins and mounts in the opposite direction.

you'll have to make a custom manifold to run it

I'm getting a killer deal because a friend crashed his evo.. And why a custom manifold. Its the same style flange as a DSM head last I checked. And then you wouldn't have to flip the turbo because it's already facing the right way... Unlike a dsm

^Correct, in the dsm world, it will face the wrong way, but we are building RWDs remember so it faces the correct way for us. The Evo exhaust manifold will bolt up as well.

I'm going to be using a Evo 9 16g (larger compressor housing than the VIII) on my stroker. The only thing I've heard is the possibility of the 8/9 turbos sitting closer to the block than if you had a dsm style turbo on it. I haven't acquired a turbo yet to do the mock up, but when you do let me know .

That's what I figured. Thank you. And I will let you know what I find once I get the turbo and manifold mocked up. Hopefully it will be soon. And like any other forum I will post pics of my findings... Thanks again for your clarification. I'll get my turbo Saturday :-D

You wil have to atleast add a spacer.. or the turbo will not fit.

There is a bulge for a balance shaft in the way that in the evo is on the other side.
(remember the evo head has it's intake & exhaust swapped)

But with a thick flange, 2 gaskets and longer headstuds it should all fit.

And keep in mind that you'll probably have to relocate the alternator to the other side.

Thanks for the extra bit of info :-) I'm ok with doing a bit of fabing. I expected it with this car. Plus I know where to get an alt relocation kit... Did it on my DSM

If anybody's in need of Evo turbo's I have several(one evo 8 small 9.8 housing, one evo 8 big 10.5 housing and one evo 9 turbo) and all are in great shape with no shaft play. PM if interested. I am planning on running my 19c from my ramquest instead of the 9 turbo on my Sprite conversion.

I'm running an Evo 8 Turbo but I had to use two exhaust flanges as spacers. It's about an inch thick including gaskets to clear the balance shaft bump out and have some clearance.
