Danger Truck!

Post by Verdad »

This will be my build thread i guess.

Ill get into details and specifics later, I have to ramp up, little discouraged since my last one died with mightyd50.com

I'll try to keep technical stuff hotlinked to other post.

A/S/L (lol @ oldschool internets)
My name is Marc. 29 Year old "machinist" in south FL. A car guy for 13 years or so, I had taken a hiatus to squirrel away money for a house and wife. Scored a house, got engaged, and now its back to the cars.

I scored my mighty max from a guy i work with. he's the original owner. And a scientist, kinda, he has like 3.5 different engineering degrees, so the title works for me. His attention to the truck was amazing. He tracked every oil change, changed the timing belt every 60k miles etc.(Which after finding out that a 4g64 is noninterference floored me as a huge waste time)

Anywho when I got my filthy little paws on it the danger truck had 346000 miles on her. Ran like a champ, although with the check engine, maintainece and brake lights all on the dash (where she got her name from BTW)

Got her home to the place i was renting at the time and snapped a couple more pics. Then started looking around the ol' internet for info.
I scored a tach'd cluster, Monty LSD, and a set of rims

Fixing the new odometer (Link on how-to soon)

Rims $150

LSD $40

Now unfortunately for me, the terms of my lease said I couldn't even change oil at the place I was at. No one had ever lived there before, so I couldn't say any new messes were someone Else's.

I hit a deer with my truck one night on the way home from work. Quite a bummer I can assure you. It killed both my new radiator and one of the new head lights the wife had gotten me to replace the weak stock headlamps with H4. H4 bulbs apparently attract deers like moths to a flame, because as most natives in FL can tell you deer are pretty damn rare this far south.

Image
Dollar thrown at him for size reference and cause I like to "make it rain" on roadkill. Not much of a strip club kind of guy, too much glitter.

Four months later I become a home owner for the 1st time.

For those who don't know home ownership is all about changing things you think are perfectly fine for things your wife feels is better. The only thing I got to do was the garage floor.

Image

13 hours of floor prep later we rolled it.

Image

I wish I would have taken more pics of how bad the garage had gotten. Full of shit is a huge understatement. Started organizing after a near death experience for the wife when i saw exactly how many boxes of Xmas decorations we have. She opted to get a storage unit, rather than take a swim in the Gulf stream and the liberation of my garage began anew.

Image

Obligatory prebuild dyno. Shame on all of you who don't do this. Lucky for me I live exactly 3 minutes from a dyno.
Image
Stock 4g64 365k miles. OEM ORIGINAL STOCK CLUTCH. Ill post pics of it as proof. Mistu stamp on pressure plate and disc. When i bought the truck he told me it was the oem clutch, but to actually see it was stunning

With the lab cleared out enough to work in, I pulled the DT into the garage for the last time under NA power.

Image

I scored fenders, bumper support and a hood from the boneyard. Test fitting them. The 1st pics show some of the damage from the deer.

While I was waiting for some of the stuff I had ordered to show up, I started using parts I've had laying around for a while.

A pillar gauges mocked up.

Image

I'll tighten it up and use double sided tape when i actually replace that boost gauge for an electrical one. For those who are wondering the pod is actually off one of my long dead CRXs.

Dad used to tell me 2 things. Clocks are for the working man. And the working man is a sucker. So the place where my clock would have gone is now home to a turbo timer from a buddy's turbo 91 Si I had bought crashed.

Link to Install notes here soon.

So with the relatively clean work done, it was time to pull out the Danger Mill

Wow, great writeup so far. You are going to have what looks to be a nice place to work on the truck. And 3 minutes to the dyno?! Whohoo! I'm a little jealous.

Well last weekend was full of highs and lows. I went from scoring a 2g Engine and R154 for 750, to getting a W58 and driving 2 hours to have a guy show me this "4g63t" which was in fact a 2.4 ... Grrrr

And after a week of chasing people down, I believe Ill get my engine and tranny dropped by my house Monday afternoon or Tuesday morning. (pray)

Anywho the rest of my parts continue to come in.

Evo Manifold with TB see what I can do with these

Snagged of Ebay for 130 shipped!

DSM chips guy (Jeff) super awesome guy to deal with, happens to live 15 minutes away. I will continue to fail upwards!

Anyways, hopefully I get my pressure plate and disc in by next weekend so I can start working on the mounts, shifter and driveshaft.

Man, I remember when my floor was that clean..
It only took about 4 weeks, then I couldn't see it!

Good luck on the build.

Nice!!! I'm hoping to buy a house after I get back from Iraq. I need a bigger garage for what I want to do. Smart move on the floor before even starting a project. I'll be following this thread....wish you were a little closer to me. Cause I'd like to see it first hand for my truck. Oh, and I hope ya at least sold the clock to make some money back!

well so far it seems the car gods have made a bukaki movie all over me.

got ripped off on a motor and tranny....

the injectors(750s) and evo 8 stuff i ordered from a reputable shop were sent to west bumbafuck but some former employee and after only 40 days i finally got my refund...

to make things even funnier the chip i ordered for an evo 3 (9.0:1 compression) and phantom 750s obviously wont work well with my 1g engine and 780s.

and the icing on the cake...
my beloved dachshund nismo (lol datsun dachshund....get it) back legs went all crippled and cost me 4k for emergency surgery on him, hes walking again but he essentially kicked santa in the nuts this year.

there is a country song brewing.

but if i wanted a simple project car, i would of bought my other haha car i wanted ('90 civic sedan)

as far as progress goes, im working on the intake manifold to hold me over till i can ball on and buy a SMIM.

i did make a decent adaptor for the evo 8 TB i had laying around.

heres a dummy drawing i made at my bench, i just started in one corner and went 2.52" and it went on silky smooth. the holes are just standard M8 1.25s threads

Everything looks good but I want to caution you. It looks like you have the same regulator I had off ebay. It acted like it performed very well, and I dont know that itwas my problem as I assembled my last motor on used pistons/rods. Make sure you havea way to monitor your fuel pressure in car and not just set it up and go. Again I couldnt tell you if that was why my motor popped or the fact that I had used those parts (along with alot of detonation very early as my timing was WAY off). Let me know how yours works as I have one sitting around I'd like to sell. My sponsor helped me out a bit and I got a nice Fuel Lab one to rock. Good luck man!

Looking good KS. You're is going to be faster than mine, and mine's a handful to keep straight when it spools. Wish I could see your face when you get it done and get to let it EAT!
