Important Question! About 4G63 vs 4G67 front dress parts!

Post by Jed118 »

The parts interchangeability on this table here:

http://www.projectzerog.com/sohc-dohc.shtml

Question: Could I use 4G67 parts instead of 4G63? Reason I ask is that the junkyard I normally go to has a lot of "useless" 1.8 elantras that they wouldn't mind me taking oil covers and pumps and little peices from... if I go to the other junkyard that has the real 4G63's, I'm gonna get nailed for every bolt HARD. I don't even want to mention how much we got charged for the chaincase last time we were there for a 1992 DOHC Saturn.

A quick response would be the best, as I am super anxious to acquire parts and begin putting this together!!

I'm not sure if they're different or not. I imagine they'd be more similar to a 7 bolt than a 6 bolt.

If its so cheap, why not go there and get the parts and find out?

Getting the engine bolted in is about 10% of the way there.
The next 80% can go quickly with help and skill.
That last 10% takes about as long as the 90% that came before it.

Well, to be honest, I don't know what I'm looking at! The two oil covers in the link look identical to me... and they're cleaned up parts. I'm going to be dealing with cold weather, dirt, and snow on EVERYTHING plus it's a 1 hr drive to this wreckers so I want to be as sure as possible.

If the 1.8 is a 6 bolt, it should work, I am not sure if they made them in a 6 or 7 bolt.

yeah you read my mind, I went to eBay and looked at 1994 elantra gaskets and 1994 Laser/Eclipse gaskets - the very same.

The head was off a 6 bolt, as is the block. My friend (turbo stellar) thinks they may be the same too, but not the 1.6 it has a different water pump and all.

I'm going to order the cheaper set (Eclipse) gaskets, worst case I can re-sell them.

The DOHC 1.8L and the DOHC 2.0L are the same except for the bore size. Everything else should be the same. When you start comparing SOHC parts, then things will likely change.
Do it in a Datsun!

A 94 4g63 is a 7 bolt. This stuff will not fit on a 6 bolt engine.

Most likely a 7 bolt since mitsu stopped producing them halfway through the 92 modle year, but to verify, you can check the oil pan like this:

^^^ Excellent!

However, Hyundai produced these on a license and made them themselves... anyways, I'd have to see about that... I seem to be perpetually stuck with these odd ball engines!

Also, exactly why can't I use the 4G64 oil cover and bits?

The engine i got from a 95 hyundai Sonata was a 6 bolt. I think all hyundai's have the 6 bolt stuff, I recall hearing that they even adapted the newer front mount CAS to the 6 bolts in mitsu powered hyundai's.
