in recent months one of our members found that the starter ring diameter was smaller on AWD flywheels compared to FWD flywheels (what I used for my 1st swap). This means that the starter will not engage when using the D50 transmission. I think he found a starter sprocket that make up for this ...

Sounds awesome! its funny I was thinking about that last week when i saw one with a factory 4G64 in it. (the older models never had 2.4 in New Zealand) I wonder how strong the new gearbox's are?

How is clearance in the newer engine bay? i might make this my next project

Yeah the auto plate (which i have) is different so lined up with the RWD gearbox.. what gearbox are you using?

I have looked into it and the starter from a 2.5 diesel mitsu engine might work.. it has 10 teeth and still 105mm between the holes

So I'm trying to correct this without pulling the gearbox out again, and buying a new flywheel.

At the moment I have the guts out of the starter and I'm looking for another assembly with a bigger pinion that I can transplant into the mitsu casing so it will bolt up.

I'm determine to find a ...

after doing some research it looks like our GVR4 flywheels are slightyly smaller than the DSM ones (5mm or so)

I'm really not too keen to take the engine/gearbox out again so i may end up maiking an adaptor plate of some sort or find a starter with a bigger pinion.... any idea of a starter that ...

I had some flanges cut in 12mm mild steel, then just weld it up where it fits with some 3" pipe

I have basically just relocated it to the front as you can see in the pic, the pipe goes from the back of the head, under the intake to the thermostat just infront of the throttle. plenty of clearance for the firewall, just get busy with a hammer to make room for the CAS

is the bearing as thick as the flywheel, ie. the hole goes right through? so it just presses in there?

And what pilot bearing do you use with the larger shaft? machine the centre of the DSM flywheel and put it there? has anyone got pics of how that works?
