My quest begins

Post by willmoodom »

Today I took my fist step towards 63/64 project. I purchased the entire topend from a dsm guy for 3oo. should have it by friday. next is sourcing a WB g64, but have'nt been able to get to crazy rays yet. I may be able to get the eagle /wiseco combo at a slight discount from the guy I bought the 63 topend from. Meanwhile I'm still looking around for a shop to do the machine work. Not too many people post co. prices. But I'm definitely going to try my hand at the assembly of this thing.

What day are you going to Crazy Rays? I can go in the mornings if you want to go together. I'll have to be back at work in B'more at 3PM though. It won't be the first time I've come straight from the junkyard to the office.

Getting the engine bolted in is about 10% of the way there.
The next 80% can go quickly with help and skill.
That last 10% takes about as long as the 90% that came before it.

That's tight DJ. I'm looking to go either Friday or Saturday. Most likely sat. because I work also. shift starts at 3:07. I'll PM you my #. What Rays is closest to you? I normally go to Jessup and mount airy, but I've been wanting to go to the other locations.

Will and I just got back from Crazy Ray's junkyard. He got a 4G64 wideblock 6 bolt from a 1990 Mitsubishi Van with an automatic trans. Last thing I thought we'd find there.

Head was already off the motor and all the engine covers were off too. Unfortunately, we had no tools so he paid a guy there to pull it for us. Can't wait to see how everything checks out. Crank turned nice and easy. Head gasket looked good even if it had those weird shape fire rings. Got the water pipe, pump and clutch fan with it too. Oil pan was pretty f'd up after they pulled it out with a forklift. Had a strange sensor on the side. I'm guessing oil level sensor. I'll try to get him to post pictures.

They were clearing out trucks next to it. I imagine if he had waited another day it would have been off to the crusher. The "firewall" plate said it had 4.22 gears. Shame to see them go to the dump, but I'm in no financial condition to be pulling ring and pinion.

Thanks a bunch DJ! If it wasn't for you prodding, I would have been assed out. Definitely was ready to call it a day and wait till tomorrow. I haven't remove the engine yet. For those that don't know, I drove my 06 impala and the trunk is how I transported the block. LOL Will attempt to get it out the trunk and up on a stand. I will definitely post picts as soon as I get to it. Thanks again for the help DJ. BTW, I think I will be getting that drive shaft from you if you still have it.
