Is this going to work???? My big picture plan!!

Post by Mazzhole »

I just want to make sure the information that I have is correct and if any of you guys can answer my questions I would greatly appreciate it!!!!

Ok here goes, i have had a couple starquests over the last 6 years and the g54b has grenaded on me 4 times now. Its time to step up to the plate and push my skills to the limit with the 4g63. I have done some research on this and here is what i have come up with. I am going to number my questions so that anyone who responds can differentiate between them easily. I just need to know that this will work before I start stockpiling parts!!! PLEASE I really want to do this and have secured the funds for it.

Engine Block

I want to use my stock tranny and from what I have learned I need a wideblock and my options are a 4g64 from 88-92 pickup, wagon or van and this is a 6 bolt. The other one I see is a 4g64 from a 92 and up mighty max and that is a 7 bolt. Can I use either of these block for my build??? (Question 1) Which of these is a better stronger block?? (Question 2)

Internals.

I want to find used stock internal from an Evo as mentioned by someone earlier. Will the crank, rods and pistons fit?? If not what crank to I need (Question 3) What connecting rods will work I guess that is dependant on crank I can use (Question 4), If I cannot find stock evo pistons then what are the best stockers I can get for this build, or I will to purchase aftermarket pistons for anything more then 200$ what should I use (Question 5) ???

Head

Can I just use any 4g63/4g64 head what are the pros and cons of the different generations?? (Question 6)

Clutch/ flywheel

I have a lightened stock starion flywheel and stage 3 act clutch will I be able to reuse these with any of the possible cranks (Question 7)???

Engine Management

I read a little about wiring and that I need the male connector from my starion, and a wiring harness from my starion. Now I would make a Frankenstein wiring harness with mostly the 4g63 harness with the plug to hook it up to my engine management ECU (Question 8)

Moving the Engine forward

Seems pretty straight forward no pun intended, though how do I extend my Drive shaft (Question 9)

Plumbing all seems pretty straightforward, will take some times and work but I am in it to win it with this one. I have put lots of time into the g54b to no avail. I appreciate your help and info. I want to start sourcing parts asap to get this going!!!

Thanx in advance!!!

Gregg,
I see your name and I have to wonder what part of MA you are from? I am northern/central, right near the NH border.
I also know many of the local DSM guys, so if you need any DSM stuff, let me know.

For 8, you might as well just track down some of the Mitsu specific connectors (CAS, MAFS) and buy NEW connectors for injectors and stuff. Loom it with shrink tubing as you're building your harness. Run a few extra wires to be safe. Label all the wires with a piece of paper under clear shrink tubing. It will take a long time to get your head around the order of how to assemble it, but a shrink tube sealed and labeled wiring harness will be worth the trouble. Might even want to buy a nice bulkhead connector.

For 9... you don't really need to do this step. Just mount everything in the stock location and do the front freeze plug setup for the water outlet. The CAS will be impossible to remove without moving the engine forward, but I think you'll like this setup more than moving everything forward.

Getting the engine bolted in is about 10% of the way there.
The next 80% can go quickly with help and skill.
That last 10% takes about as long as the 90% that came before it.

Thanx guys for the quick response!! more Clarification needed.

Wiring
How do i construct the wiring harness.. First get my harness out of my car??1.....Then splice in the 4g63 plug connectors to my harness solder and shrink wrap them??? 2 What is a bulk head connector?? 3 Where do i run the few extra wires...were the harness goes threw the fire wall for things like additional oil pressure gauge, and coolant gauge?? 4 Do i still use my current ECU or one from a turbo eclipse?? 5

Engine position
Cool so if i take a freeze plug out of the front of the engine head i don’t need to use the coolant plug in the rear of the head....obviously plug the back coolant outlet??? 6 Sweet want to keep the hunk of iron and alum as far back as possible....... what is the CAS??? 7

Pistons
Who would sell custom pistons for this set up??? 8 With the six bolt block it is a 2.4 liter motor correct??? 9

Block
The 6 bolt wide block that i need is a 4g64 out of a 88-92 Mitsubishi truck, van or wagon, anyone know the model names of these vehicles?? 10

all 2.4's in trucks and vans were wideblock, auto or manual. 2.0's in trucks and vans were wide w/auto's, narrow w/manuals
