I need help with a KM 145 Tranny, Mighty Max

Post by Heynow999 »

Hi

I'm new here. I just found this forum. I have an 83 Mitsu Mighty Max with a 2.3 diesel and the 4x4 KM145 tranny. I am not a mechanic, but I am not afraid to try and fix my truck, rather than pay hundreds to the garage.

What happened is my tranny got stuck in 4th gear when I tried to shift into reverse. So it is basically stuck in fourth, the clutch still works, but it won't shift. I believe it is the linkage that is stuck. What I want to know, is there a cover under the carpet that I can use to access the shifter, rather than dropping the tranny to fix it. I could remove a plate to try and fix it, but dropping the tranny is way over my head.

Any help is appreciated

it may just act like it is stuck in 4th gear. because 4th gear is basically 1 to 1 ratio, you can be fooled into beleiving its in 4th , when actually its a gear stuck on the main shaft.
Having said that, if its in the linkage, yes, you can remove the shifter from the top of the trans and try to line up the 'gate'
as you look down in the trans you will see three slotted fingers , they should all be lined up striaght across , forming one 'gate'
if you see one of these fingers all the way back or all the way forward, you may be able to pry it into place and get the gate back in line
but usually it will only be a temporary repair because something is wore out. maybe a bushing or a pin has come out causing that to happen

OK, I will take the shifter out and take a look. I am in Canada, and this was the first cold day of the year. I think that may have something to do with it. I don't think it is frozen, maybe it just didn't shift as it was supposed to because of the cold.

Anyone know where to get parts for old Mitsubishi's??

Thanks

There is a Mitsubishi Graveyard in NY. They have a good website and are usually pretty helpful. With the exchange rates the way they are it might be pretty economical.

Getting the engine bolted in is about 10% of the way there.
The next 80% can go quickly with help and skill.
That last 10% takes about as long as the 90% that came before it.
