For the last 30 hours I've been searching the web on almost every turbo powered dsm site out there. I've scribbled 2 full legal pads with notes. I think I finally have what I need to start my project. I currently own 7 D-50 trucks, 79-86, and countless 2.6 powered caravans. Sorry I don't have any exp. with starions, but people don't ask me to haul those off for them.
Anyway my big goal is the 4g63 1st gen swap into my 86 custom d-50. This site has given me the last bit of info I needed to start this project.
My truck currently has a G63B 2.0 SOHC, Weber carb, custom headers, custom ignition, with a 5 spd tranmission. Of couse I got all the pick-up parts to last me a lifetime.
BTW I noticed the biggest problem with the 2.0 was the oil pump/balance shaft locking up in the block. This happened in my current engine and I found a way to literaly 'cut them out' without affecting the oil pump. I've managed to bring lots of destroyed 2.0 blocks back from the dead with this simple balance shaft removal. (this is the 2.0 which does not have a shaft eliminator kit like the 2.6)
anyway, that's old news, now for the swap, as I said I have plenty of D-50 parts and know my way around the 1st gen model (79-86) of these trucks. I've read almost all that I could find on this swap. However before I start I would like to clarify my notes so far:
Although not the strongest a G63B manual transmission will bolt to a 4G63 engine with the upper two trans bolts 111mm apart.
Can I get a confirmation on this?
Also I've got two transmisions available, a 4spd and a 5spd that both fit the G63B. Which of these would work the best?
Since I'm using the original trans, I could keep the original manual clutch right?
And lastly, Would about the throwout bearing tolerance?
Please, these are the last things I need to know before I start my scanvenger hunt for parts.
Great site btw!!

4G63? Are you sure? That's a DOHC engine I think.
The only 2.0 SOHC I know (besides the ill-fated diesle) is the G63B same as I have. Originaly with a 2 barrel Mikune carb in the US. My book is in the shop but I don't think the 84 had an ECU on the carb like my 86 and as far as I can remember the canadian model uses a Solex model carb, (the easiest to rebuild btw) and a lot less emission controls. Everything else is pretty much the same. I haven't seen a canadian 2.0 yet but I do have a canadian 1979 (all the way down in florida!) with a 2.6 with over 350k miles on it. I don't know how, but the engine and carb has never been touched on it. I quit driving it when the seat mounts rusted off the floor and I got tired of eating dash when I had to hit the brakes. This was the first vehicle I have ever owned and I really abused it when I got it, (think dukes of hazzard), what holds it together I have no clue. It still cranks and runs with no smoke, but I seem to get the best out it on Delo 400 30wt. oil. <_<

 You're right, I guess all these engine numbers rolling around in my head had me confused. I should've known really since I've stared at that plate a thousand times. I went out and rechecked and it seems that it's pretty common here. In fact my first thought was swapping the head and internals on the block and parting out a 1st gen dsm. However I've found that there are several differences between them, oil ports, bolt patterns, piston size and clearence.
So if the tranny will bolt up then why not just put in the whole motor? I know it's been done to a 2nd gen d-50, (I'm not sure about a first gen) but I can't find a write-up on it. Talking about the dohc 2.0 not the 2.6 sohc turbo. And I know everyone says the d-50 tranny is the weakest choice for slamming gears, but I'm not planning on building a 400+ drag car here. I just want to build something that's streetable and can leave someone baffled at the stop light. So prolly just gonna keep a stock dsm turbo engine with a few bolt ons.
Its the model number that makes it diffferent L026. But don't quote me on that!
Really nice truck btw. Gotta get a cam so I can post some pics myself

I want to go the same route as you, drop the 4G63T in and leave it stock for a while, but that wont last long cuz i got a need for speed, and the lightwieght little D50 seems perfect for goin fast (maybe not safely but who cares!!!
)
And you're right i haven't seen any 1st gen D50's with the conversion, but they say the trucks dont differ much between the two generations
I have heard of V-8 swaps done with both generations, ford 302's, chev 305's and 350's and dodge a-engines (318, 340, 360)
also the mopar A-904 auto transmission bolts in with the dodge A-engines, all you need is a crossmember from an auto D50
but i dont wanna spend that much on gas, and the 4G63 has alot of potential and an availabilty of parts that just makes me think of endless possiblilties
i have found a page where a guy built a Conquest 4G63 with a toyota 5 spd tranny from a supra i believe 4G63 Conquest
i can get some more urls for ya but since you've done your research you've probably seen everything that i have
btw thanks, my girlfriend calls it sex on wheels lol
was the LO26 a rare model? the guy i picked it up from says parts for it are sometimes pretty hard to find, took me 4 weeks just to find the right fuel pump for it, the local boys kept tryin to sell me a 2.6 pump

There shouldn't be any trouble getting parts for it, but I have had the same problem alot. Like someone didn't put the info in the computer right to start with. I know the belts they sell me never work. The alternator fits the powersteering and vice-versa. Weird.
I took the factory pump off when I got my weber carb. Didn't need all those extra hoses. Got rid of the plastic spacer on the fuel pump that cracks and/or leaks when you look at it. I just used the spacer for a patern and made a block off plate. Just remember to take the pump rod out and save it. Those things are getting scarce. I seem to misplace one every time I pull the head.
Yeah even I have a truck set aside for the sbc swap, Thought D-350 would look neat on the fender, even though I don't like cross breeding cars. I even saw a 426 Hemi drag D-50. Ever since I've had to do something with a D-50, and the fact that there are NO aftermarket parts just makes me want to it that much more.
btw If you see a chrome grill, steal it! (joking) There all gone. Found that out when I hit a deer one night. Oh and I got the last radiator core support available. That's why I haven't let any of my d-50's go for scrap metal.

Yeah i know what you mean about cross-breeding
I told the guy who i bought the truck from i was thinkin about droppin a 283 or 327 and he was like WTF are you thinking??? its a DODGE!!! so then he pulls out all these articles about small block conversions, i have yet to talk to him about the 4G63T, im sure he is familiar with it though... (the guy works at the dealership so his mopar roots run deep heheh)
my pump never had a spacer, i just used the two gaskets that came with the pump lol
and i have 3 of those push rods sittin around, stole em from the wrecker in town
and i've never seen a chrome grill... i was just gonna paint the one i have cuz its startin to look ugly
what do you use for a fuel pump on your truck? cuz i tried converting mine to a electric pump but it wouldn't fire when i got it all hooked up

I used a universal fuel pump nothing special, mounted on the fender well and wired to the coil. I really need to get a relay for it but at least I don't have to have an extra switch on the dash. I had some flooding issues with my stock carb, I assumed it was the feedback and ecu crap getting all confused. (I hate the mikune carb with ecu!) So I shelled out 400 or so on the weber kit. I love it! One fuel line in, one vacuum line for spark advance, and one wire to the choke. Thats it! I do have to run the timing at about 15 degrees and it should normally be at 5 degrees. When I try to set it at five the engine lugs really bad. I haven't had time to pull it in my shop, (got those 'paying jobs' to take care of first), but I'm going to check the timing belt. Or it could just be the nature of this big carb I got on it. The difference is awesome. More power and better gas millage. Well I havn't been able to check the milage, I've got the speedometer in pieces trying to make a custom dash. But the power is there.
The chrome grill btw is only chrome on the top and bottom bars. I see a few still out there, usually on the 4x4 models. Then later I see the same truck with the grill cut out to accomodate some ridiculously oversized brushguard.
I'll never understand these rednecks and their rap music.

I tried using an electric pump from an 84 nissan, but it didn't work and the next day i found a replacement mechanical pump so i wasn't too worried about it
If i buy the weber carb conversion for my truck will i have to run an electric pump? or can i use my mechanical with it? its a bigger carb so i assume it might need more fuel, which an electric pump would provide easily
Do you know anything about the carb thats on my truck? i hate messing with japanese carbs, like there's a million adjuster screws and another billion vacuum hoses attached to it...
Also i have problems with finding a new fuel sending unit, i never know how much fuel is in my tank, and i knew where there was a fuel tank with one here, but when i got there, their loader had run over the tank and totally flattened it
Haven't been able to find another one so i just keep track of my mileage
Just today i saw a 1986 power ram 50, i think it was a diesel, but the goof did exactly what you said, cut the grill all to shit and put a big brushgaurd on it
btw, i thought rednecks liked country music? maybe thats just a canadian redneck thing... lol

I don't know the D50/Mighty Max very well, but I have been interested in doing a project on one for awhile now. I own a DSM and from what I have learned, the 4g63 turbo head fits onto the 4g64 FWD block with some minor work to make a 2.4L turbo DOHC hybrid. The 4g63 and 4g64 blocks are from the same casting, only the 4g64 was bored more and milled less for more displacement. Many DSMers have been swapping the 4g64 block into their cars over the years with great success. Physically the 6 bolt 4g64 block is just as strong as the 6 bolt 4g63, with the longer stroke providing a broader torque curve reving high enough for any street car.
What does this have to do with anything? The 4g63 has been the envy of many starquest owners wishing the power and reliability in a RWD platform. The Best way to get a 4g63 into a starquest is to use a wideblock 4g63 not available in the US. Which brings us back to the 4g64. There is a wideblock 4g64 in the US that fits right into the starquest from the 88-92 D50/Mighty Max trucks. Only I don't know whether or not the 4g63 head will fit the 4g64 wideblock like it does the FWD 4g64.

This is incorrect. The castings are different. There are also more than one different version of the 6-bold 4G63 blocks.]
