mitsu solid rear ends

Post by JasonAG »

im not sure if anyone would... but does anyone know what rear end is in my 77 colt... and what other cars or maybe trucks have the same rear end. mine is shot and i dont know where to look for a new one. i could retro fit another one in but it would be easyer to just replace the 3rd member.
thanks!

for the money you spend replacing ten you could have a good chevy or ford solid rear

The rear axle in your car is a 170 mm ring gear size. If you look around and find an axle from a Plymouth Firearrow it will give you a 180 mm ringgear and a large choice of ratios as well as some LSDs that are available.
It has been popular to swap to the early RX7 rear, this is not as strong as the Firearrow nor as easy to find many ratios but is good enough for most.
The RX7 is a bit wider than yours and they have weird bolt circle.
The early Datsun pickups were common swaps also.
There are other options if you need them.

On the Firearrow you want the whole thing. It is a larger axle altogether and came behind the 2.6. The width should be the same.

The Toyota is not a real big gearset, no bigger than what you have.

Correct on the Mazda.

I am not familiar with your setup, How much power are you running. I would expect a bit more than the fairly strong 2.6 that I ran for years in one of my Colts. I pretty much used up the clutches in the diff over a 14 year run but otherwise was trouble free.

The gearset in your car is the same size as in the back of a DSM and the EVO today, the diff is narrower in your car and the output splines have grown but the gearset will take some power.

Your axle remained in use through the 80s in the Lancers overseas, the Tredias here and the Hyundia Pony up in Canada.
The Lancer EX and the GSR of the early 80s had limited slips in them. As did the turbo cars but they were the larger gears.
I just brought over a LSD set a few months ago for a swap I did in a 74 Colt for a Canadian customer.

im hoping to run up to 300hp once the new motor is in...

so your telling me that if i find a firearrow housing i can import a lsd for it?... seems like a lot of work and money for a 20+ year old oem lsd.
how does a guy go about buying one of those anyway?

also i would think that there should be some aftermarket options for the fb rearend... ive seen those built up into effective drifters before. and that one would be easier to find... and im going to be using a mazda tranny anyway so they will like eachother.

once again thanks for all the help... im exited that there is someone here with colt experience!

The Firearrow rear uses the gears from the front of a 4 cyl 4wd and the LSD from a non intercooled Starion.
The Mazda rear is good for 250 hp or so. At least that was the claim a dozen years ago, Its splines are 2 mm smaller that the mitsu units. The Sapporo axle is a good unit but needs the mounts changed to the leaf springs.
