Mighty Max g64b T56 swap & NA tuning Q's; Drop SCIENCE!

Post by KusarigamaRogue »

I recently picked up a MINT 1990 Mighty Max 2wd 5-speed 2.4L with 330k on the clock (runs great) for what I would usually spend weekly at the bar. Needless to say, this truck is meant for Detroit hijinx and I will be modifying it accordingly.

MISSION: haul kegs jump curbs

I have 0 interest in turbocharging this particular vehicle. When (IF!) the stock engine blows i'll replace it with another 2.4L, HOWEVER I need to know a few things if you do and are up to disseminating information that all MM owners will appreciate:

What is all needed to complete a T56 swap into this stock vehicle with a Wideblock Billhousing (I would like this thread to be a guide of sorts for all MM owners, appreciation in advance and you're stacking up Karma this very moment)?

There is a lot of information regarding the 4g64 FWD swap and I have not been able to find if this exactly correlates to the RWD setup.

And does anything rear of the transmission need to be altered or will the MM driveshaft literally keep on truckin' ?

IN ADDITION:

What is some Mitsu Magic I can cast on the NA 2.4L ?

My project plans are:

NACA duct
tubular bumpers
full undertray
roll cage
LSD
T56 swap
smoke-stack
Ahooga horn
run-flats

Sounds like a solid plan. Sounds like you're going with a DOHC head and wideblock 2.4, am I right? There should be pretty good info here if you need it.

Any chance you'll be in the market for a wiring harness? Should be pretty easy for me to splice your EFI truck wiring harness to a DSM wiring harness. I might also be able to supply a front mounted cas bracket if mine treats me will this spring. Saves you from having to modify the firewall or move the motor forward.

Be on the lookout for an 87 or 88 Mazda B2600 transmission... like the full thing. Might be a good alternative to a T56 if you can find it. It's basically an RX7 Turbo II transmission with a wideblock bellhousing and a few inches less distance to the shifter.

Getting the engine bolted in is about 10% of the way there.
The next 80% can go quickly with help and skill.
That last 10% takes about as long as the 90% that came before it.

If you absolutely want to go with the T56, you will need a bell housing made. Bills Auto Fab makes them for a reasonable price to bolt a T56 to a 2.4 Wideblock. you would need an AWD Eclipse Flywheel, and a DSM clutch with a T56 center section. The MM driveshaft definitely wouldn't work, you would need the T56 yoke welded on, and the length would definitely be different.
Why the T56? Such a big trans with a 6th gear so low, I doubt a N/A 2.4 would even be able to pull it?
