Need some Suggestions/advice 4g64.3t into what?

Post by Xharlequinx »

I have a 64 block with a 63 GSx head, 30r Garrett and a custom intake manifold for the non transverse setup. It's fully assembled and in a mightymax. I'm not really liking it and wanted to know my options (with least amount of fab work) to get the block dropped and mounted into something else.
I know of only 1 or 2 options so far: gs Spyder convertible, (but I think we all can agree it would be nice to have it rwd instead) or a conquest/starion pre 93.
So I read a thread about motor mount issues for 6bolt conquest/starion where I would need to make sure to use mounts from the mighty max. Other than this, I don't really if its the best idea/option.
(New to this awesome forum, so thanks for any help !)

Well Starions don't exist past 89 so I'm not sure where you got Pre-93 from.

It's not a matter of 6 bolt/7 bolt for mounting, it's that as US Starquests never came with 4g63s, so you use the pickup mounts from a truck that had g63/g64 in them. The brackets for the g52/g54 trucks are the same as the Starions and won't line up on the Sirius motors, without slotting the existing holes for the new engine.

Starion and pickups are the probably the best bet for least amount of fabrication. I know my car is pretty in depth for modification/fabrications.

Thanks so much iwasnt sure too much abt when starion discontinued. Just quickly skimmed about crank change and 93 but maybe they were confused too. Or maybe they were talking about the 63 block going to 2nd gen, but i thought that was 97. Anyway, thanks for the info. I just need to find a rolling chasis for a conquest or starion.
How much power does the rear end handle, you think? Transmission? Or do you think ill need to go with r154 or fc tranny?

It depends on your power goals for what transmission setup, but if you want least custom work, a R154 is not apart of your plans then, I'm sure someone else can fill you in there as I'm not too knowledgeable on the Starquests for rear end strengths.

Example of custom work,my 76 Galant 1.6l g32 rear end and KM110 4spd would die behind the built 2.3l g63t, so I swapped in a Toyota hilux rear end and a R154 to suit my needs. However I had to cut my tunnel open, have to convert to hydraulic clutch, plumb new brake lines, and get a driveshaft built for starters. Every car for the swap has different needs. If you plan on using a Starquest, search on here in the projects section or on Starquestclub.com.

Now I see where you got mixed up. 1992.5 is when the g63 went to 7 bolt, thus 93+ DSMs for example are all 7 bolt g63s. up to early '92 they are 6 bolts. 97+ they started coming out with the revised thrust bearings which are the same as in Evo 5-9. Evo 4+ are the 180 degree flipped motors.

Oooooooh, that all makes sense regarding my mixing up of 97 and 92.5/93 years for dsm 2gs. Isn't 92.5/93 the last year they ran 3 bolt rears on the 1g as well?
I will simply need to look for a transmission to bolt up to the 4g64 block. I got the block out of a 91 mighty max, so if its a wide block or narrow, would that be a deal breaker as far as what I can bolt up to it? Or is that pretty much something a custom bell housing adaptor would take care of?
Thanks so much, you're d first person to give me specifics that make me see what I'm up against here!

If it's a 4g64, it should be a wideblock, but neither one really limits you if you go the bill Hincher made Bellhousing route, but if your thinking factory bolt on you need a wideblock transmission, either the one out of the pickup or a Starquest one, however pickups use cable clutch and Starions, R154s, W58s are hydraulic clutch. So common sense will tell you, if you put a hydraulic setup in a cable set up vehicle, you have some work to do.

Narrowblock RWD transmissions are a bit harder to come by, because they were only offered in the early years of the Pickups (79-86 If I recall)
92 was the start of the 4 bolt rear ends.

Just read through the main page on everything, it will guide you through the basics of the swap

I see what you're saying now. (correct me if I am wrong) but if I were to put a hydraulic set up into a cable set up vehicle (into mighty max) it would be an issue. But taking the smaller 2.4l 46g4/3t FROM the truck INTO the starion (hydraulic clutch set up) would there still be a problem?
