RX7 TRANSMISSION SWAP

Post by OLDIE »

Can anyone advise weather the G54B bell required to fit the 7 box in a Starion comes from a 4wd or 2wd only????????
I have done the swap in my car but am searching for more bells for others.

One thing missing from the swap info is that the 7 ext housing needs to be shortened by the front to rear measurement of 4 ext housing bolts where the shifter/stick fits into as this brings the shifter up thru the stock opening as in a rhd car the stick will need to be bent vertical and extended otherwise you will have to stretch to reach it.
When filling with oil i jack the car as high as possibleon one side to get the box near level and remove the 2 filler bungs then fill useing the top one and stop when the oil runs out of the lower one.

I had problems with bauking when shifting and tried a number of oils and additives on being advised by a transmission guru??? with no improvement and was about to tear it out and in desperation i filled it with REDLINE LW SHOCKPROOF OIL ( Smurf blood lol ) and within 5 miles/8 klm drive I noticed an improvement in shift and it continued to get better and the box has not been replaced :D
I am a skeptic and thought that I had read about Redline ( on a Nissan forum ) was bs but now am a believer and changed to Redline in my stroker as well.!!!!

The RWD and 4WD bell housings should be the same. Just be sure that its a transmission that bolted to a Mitsubishi 2555cc motor and not the Mazda 2605cc motor.

Getting the engine bolted in is about 10% of the way there.
The next 80% can go quickly with help and skill.
That last 10% takes about as long as the 90% that came before it.

Thanks DJ That's what I was thinking.
I have found 3 and am always looking as they are as rare as rocking horse poo here.
PS I was told that there was an Ford SUV called a Raider that may have the correct bell so will have to check it out .

I have checked out the Raider and no go on that BUT the 2&4 wd G54B motored utes/pick ups are the same according to the wreckers who claim to know.

The Dodge Raider / Mitsubishi Montero has lots of similarities to the Starion chassis. They came with the same 2.6 G54B block as the Starion. Lots of other parts are the same or similar too.
