I think there is a lot of value to trying to do a 4g63 swap on a super tight budget.
I too get excited about the possibilities of a top mount stainless exhaust mani, tubular aluminum intake manifold, stand alone fuel management, huge injectors, blow through GM MAF, and get super hard for a billhousing. I have been crawling through this site reading and learning for the past 6 months. I have my motor and harness (not ready to go) but ready, and I am looking to swap into an 88 Power Ram 50.
The problem is that when I start dreaming, the budget gets blown and I loose all focus of what I am truly wanting this truck for.
lets look at some factors for deciding what I want out of this truck.
1) I dont race
2) I dont mud
3) I dont drift
4) I dont rock-crawl
5) I dont really even drive aggressively
1) I do want a peppy truck, with aftermarket support
2) I do want a turbo prepared engine with reliable components
3) I do want the benefit of EFI over carb
4) I do want a turbo vehicle
When keeping my expectations real, and not getting carried away, I want to do a Bare Bones/Bare Essentials swap.
To achieve this, I want to remove as much custom fabrication, one off pieces, non factory items, etc out of the picture. I know that some are REQUIRED, and I understand that.
In my obsessive reading on this site and HotrodCoffeShop, i noticed that when a user asks..."What can I do to achieve XYZ to get my swap running, there are instant replies of custom everything, expensive one off parts, 1000 dollar turbos, etc.
I have some simple and concise concerns about swapping the 4g63 into my 88 Power Ram 50. And I think for the sake of my future questions, the aforementioned information is really important.
All that to say....... everyone talks about interference with the swap. Some have done a great job taking a picture and posting the interference, IE the clearance issue on the back of the head, but what I really need is pictures of the following interferences:
1) Members mention that the stock turbo o2 housing will not work due to interference: anyone have a picture or detailed explaination?
2) the wastegate arm does not work in its stock set up due to interference: anyone have a picture or a detailed expaination?
3) there is little to zero information I can gather about maintaining 4wd in a MM D50, are there any pictures of oil pan/differential interferences?
4) Alternator interferences? I have seen alternators in almost every location one can imagine.. Can someone explain why there is a need to relocate? Is there an interference in the stock location?
I think these will be truly helpful as:
1) I want to use my o2 housing
2) I want to stay internal wastegate
3) I dont want to relocate my alternator.
You guys are great and informative, so I hope this thread can gain some momentum to help myself and others. Thanks. I will post pictures of my engine because everyone loves to see pictures.....but I dont want to dissapoint...right now it looks like everyone elses 4g63 minus the front freezeplug in the head.
pictures of interferences?
