Fuel cell talk

Post by Gamble »

Thinking about if I keep this car the first thing I am going to do is put a fuel cell in it. Probably a poly cell from summit, maybe 12 gallons.
Questions.
Where does this mount to exactly? I have never done one before? I plan to cut the floor panel in the hatch and if it needs bracing I can weld up something.
Where does the vent tube go?
Think I can be able to use the stock fill tube?
How do i get the fuel gauge to still work?

This is the one I'm looking at

Do I need a metal box around it?

Do you really have a good reason for this? Once fuel is in the passenger compartment, no matter what its sealed in, its a whole new level of danger.

One of my biggest regrets on the racecar was putting a fuel cell in it. If it were in a sealed trunk it would be one thing but in a hatchback, its just too risky. Would have been much better to keep it under the back and what better way to do that than the stock tank.

Getting the engine bolted in is about 10% of the way there.
The next 80% can go quickly with help and skill.
That last 10% takes about as long as the 90% that came before it.

No reason really, just always wanted to do one and I figured it would be a good way to start the project. You have good valid points so I will reconsider. Any fuel cells that would stay under? I was thinking of cutting out the whole top of the hatch, but I guess I won't anymore :)
