hi. im picking up my 89 conquest tsi in a few days. i plan to use it as my DD while im buiding my other car, a 97 v6 dodge avenger w/ custom turbo setup. but when thats done in about a month or 2, i want to do the 4g63 swap on the quest. so ive been researching and just have a few questions:

1. im gonna be using a 1g dsm 4g63 turbo block (6 bolt). will this go into the quest w/o custom mounts? ive read some people say u can use the stockers, im not sure if they are talking about the NT version of the block. from what i gather theres a different version of the 4g63 avaiable out there.

2. will the engine bolt up to the stock quest tranny? it is an auto. and if i wanted to do a manual swap, what tranny should i use? the d50 2.0?

3. how do i get the manifold to pont the othe way? right now im thinking either A. weld the stock side shut and put the TB on the other side, or B. custom manifold.

4. The ECU. do i go w/ the DSM ecu and harness? or am i gonna need some kind of crazy hybrid ecu? or a modified stock one?

Thnx guys. great site btw.

i could have sworn thats this site...

ive been searching for the last few days actually. im just confused on the different 4g blocks. i see some posts that answer my questions, then others that contradict those answeres. and it seems the confusion comes from the different type of these blocks available. i just want to know the answers regarding a 1g dsm 4g63 block specifically.

1) youll have to get some 2.0 mighty max motor mounts. you can get them from the junkyard for around $10. buschur sells them for $130. apiece. ridiculous.
2)the 4g WILL NOT bolt up to your tranny. if your car is auto, i would stay auto and oput a th-350 into it. you wont have to worry about getting a clutch pedal assembly, changing clutches, or slave cylinder plumbing stuff. its a little pricy to go the th-350 route but you wont regret it once its done.
3)you could do the modified stock mainfold but if you call up jim at JMFabrications he will make you a custom rwd SMIM for $450. thats who did mine and its a work of art. super nice guy and great service.

i would try to find an eprom ecu (91-94) for your project. that way youll have numerous tuning options when your ready.

just to add to peregrine's post

1: YOUR 4g63 wont bolt up, it's what is considered a "narrow" block. measure between the two lower bellhousing bolts. You'll see it's about an inch (i think) narrower than your starquest. Now you can use a 4g63, which is a 2.0L, that comes out of some vans and trucks, that had manual transmissions, that are "wide" blocks. These measure approx 13.25 inches across those same bellhousing bolts. Or, you can use a 4g64, which is a 2.4L, that came in 90 and up, Dodge d-50, and Mitsu Mighty Max's. Now, these 4g64's have a single cam head, if you're going for performance, you need the head from that 4g63, which bolts right up to the 4g64 block. However, you still need some more parts. Namely, the oil pump housing from the 4g63, and some timing components from a 94 Mitsu Galant, with the 2.4L DOHC engine, which is a 4g64, BUT narrow.

2:As above, the wide block engines will bolt up, flywheel and all is the same bolt patterns, but YOUR 4g63 will not bolt to the stock quest trans. it will bolt to a narrow pattern manual d-50/mm trans, but these are known to be rather weak.

3:See peregrine's post, good info there

heres the link to jmfabrications. tell him what your doing and he will hook you up. you wont need to shorten your runners like i did so its basically just a flipped IM. good luck. http://www.jmfabrications.com/

Getting the engine bolted in is about 10% of the way there.
The next 80% can go quickly with help and skill.
That last 10% takes about as long as the 90% that came before it.
