What's the largest turbo you can put on a 4G63/4G64 Starion?

What's the largest turbo you can put on a 4G63/4G64 Starion?

Post by AustinTSI »

So I'm buying everything for my 4g64 wideblock 4g63 head combo and I've got some questions about the turbo and exhaust manifold. I don't want to have to relocate the alternator as I live in Texas and am NOT willing to give up the AC. I also don't want to more or eliminate the power steering pump.

For people that have already done this swap what turbo and manifold did you use? Did you run into clearance issues with the motor mounts?

Thankx, David.

Your manifold will really determine what turbo you can run. A custom top mount unit that points the turbo inlet away from the motor a little will give you room for power steering and let you keep the alternator where it is. The stock manifold will really limit you on those two "options".
First pick a turbo frame that you like (T3, T4, Mitsu, T3/T4 etc) that meets your power and driving goals. Then find some external dimensions for it. You can probably make some good guestimates from there. If you have the turbo in hand, then you can hang it off the side and build the manifold to suit. Custom will likely be your only option.

I'm probably going to go custom (90% chance) but I wanted to find if there are other options first. I'd like to be able to find something I could use without paying $1000 for a custom.

I'm considering developing a custom top mount T4. The first ones would be built in heavy mild steel with some bracing and be ceramic coated to keep the cost down and once I have that finished then I may make it in SS. I would make it so that it will fit an HX-52. Then you would have plenty of room to put a T4 to T3 adaptor and still have room to mount an HX-40 or a Garrett.
