need opinions on a D50

ok a buddy and I are working on building a D50 for a limited budget racing series.

The problem is the auto trans in it now is weak, and starting to die.

I haven't had a chance to messaure if it is wide block or narrow, which I know is a big thing to figure out. We have to more a few other projects out of the shop first, before we start on the D50, I personally would like to swap to a 5-spd, if I have to i'll drop another auto in.

Here my question, on the cheap, what would some of your experienced Rwd 4g people doing for a swap?

If the block is narrow... what transmission/combo
if the block is wide... what transmission/combo..
