Bought Eric Pleibiah's old 4x4 Mighty Max. Tranny Problem!
Well the tranny is dead. Took it to ESP today to see what they think. The tranny is a D50 tranny built out of about 3 different trannies for a crazy hybrid but old parts where used per the customer and now its dead.
What are my options for another tranny?
I have 2 motors right now. A full built 2.4 I mean the works. Eagle rods, Eagle crank, Wiseco pistons etc. Full race 2.4 took me years to build.
I also have a stock 6-bolt that has a rebuild. I really want to stick with the 2.0 and have a quick daily driver and a fun truck. In the 300-350 Whp range. I emailed bill today for some options on a adapter.
Not sure what the prices run for something like that but looking for ideas options on what to do.
Also doing most of the build on live camera. You can watch at:
www.chowda.us On at different times of the day being retired from the military now in the makeshift "garage" a lot lol.
Looking foward to hearing from you guys! Help a legend come back to life!
Thanks,
Josh

Really! I like the sound of that!smog wrote:I know there have been transfer cases bolted onto a r154. I believe you need to change the tailshaf tot a r151 or something. I looked up this informationa while back, it would be possible. Dunno about the w58.
Has to be a standered forget auto. And I want to keep the transfer case selectable with the 2wd/4wd option. Does it bolt right on?
Well after talking for bill a good while I found these:
1988
Transmission
Toyota Truck 22RE,5 Sp,4x4,Floor
1986
Transmission
Toyota 4Runner -U,NO TURBO EFI
1987
Transmission
Toyota Pickup/Stout MT, gas, 4X4, 'W' ser TRA-C.S-121K
1985
Transmission
Toyota 4Runner M.T., EFI eng ('W' ser tra)--U
1987
Transmission
Toyota Truck w series,#93683
1988
Transmission
Toyota Pickup/Stout MT, 4X4, 4 Cyl, 'W' ser tra-READY
1987
Transmission
Toyota 4Runner 102k,#93443
1987
Transmission
Toyota 4Runner 5SP
Question is. How do I adapt the 4x4 part?
Here is where I am at now.
-Get Bill's adapter
- This will allow for adaptation to the 4G63 block
- Trans fits in with motor and all.
NOW what next? Does the Transfer case from the D50 bolt on to the W tranny? OR Do I have to get custom driveshafts made?

I would think the W series 4x4 tranny is your best and easiest option beyond stock Mitsu stuff. No matter what, you'll likely need custom driveshafts. Yes, you will likely need the transfer case as it will bolt directly to the transmission you're using.
What about just using a stock MM 4x4 trans? Also, I know there were diesel MM trucks. Does the transmission even resemble something that will bolt to a 4G63? Diesels make good torque and I would think it would be a little stronger than the stock 4 cylinder stuff.
My advice is to go to a salvage yard and start looking around to see what you find. I'm sure any W series or R series 4x4 transmission will work with Bill's bellhousings. If you can find a narrow block Mitsu transmission, it will likely be the easiest option, especially if it comes out of a MM/D50. But it may not support your power goals. You gotta start somewhere though.

Do it in a Datsun!
1972 Datsun 510
7-bolt 4G63T, EVO 9 pistons and rods, Garrett GT3076R, "flipped" stock intake, Toyota R154, Z31 R200 w/ CVs

Hmm some interesting points there. Found a few 4x4 trannies in the 400 dollar range. Might be a starting point. Trying to keep this build under 1k.
Might do another 4x4 tranny just for now to get it running and do all the measuring etc. for the W series setup.
W series tranny $250
W series Transfer Case $150
Bill's adapter $250
Custom drive shafts $$$
If it will even work? Who the hell knows...
Have the W series trannies been used before?

Epic fail on that one...
Transfer case is on the other side!
Seriously running out of ideas.
Got about 3 left.
-Wait for a call back from ESP and see what the damages are.
-Take whats left of the tranny to a regular tranny shop and have the do a rebuild.
-Or by some vodoo magic get ahold of eric and beg him to do the starion in a MM tranny swap one more time!
-Or just convert to RWD and call it the day. It would not be the same with a strickly 2WD truck.
