Just a thin piece of metal will help to combat the heat that is radiating off the housing. I've used some aluminum sheeting from the hardware store before.

Either way, 1.5" is enough gap. It shouldn't get hot enough to damage anything but maybe the paint on the strut tower.

I think one time Matt's floor was glowing red in the drift car and melted his shoes...

Getting the engine bolted in is about 10% of the way there.
The next 80% can go quickly with help and skill.
That last 10% takes about as long as the 90% that came before it.
