89 Conquest to 4G63 Questions and advice.

Post by rockvilleash1976 »

What I have:
89 Conquest 5 spd shp with 51k miles. Car is in good shape and I drive it often. 30,000 mile 7 bolt 4G63 complete with intake and turbo 16g. Time and budget are not a big deal. I just want a nice overall car when done.

What I want:
Reliable quest that can be driven often and hit the 1/4 1-2 times a year. I am looking for the mid 12's in the 1/4.

I have been reading post on this site and over at Starquest club where I have been a member for a couple of years now. I am looking for people who have done this swap and would like to offer their advice and what worked and what they would do different. i.e. Tranny, manifold, turbo, intake, management, intercooler, waste gate. If you moved the motor forward.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks for the input. I am leaving for Iraq in a few weeks so I will have plenty of time to do research.

Sorry to disagree with you mainstream, but I think the narrow block is a good choice. 7 bolts are not limited like you say. It is true that there have been issues with crank walk, but if done correctly, the engine itself is better than the 6 bolt. Since he already has a nice motor, it would be okay to get a new tranny/bellhousing combo. However, if you don't already have a motor, then keep your Starquest trans and go with a built wide block.

Going mid 12s on a stock DSM block at sea level is not out of the question. It can be done with the 16g on your motor. If it's an EVO3 16g, it should be pretty easy. You can get almost 400hp out of an EVO3 turbo if you push it hard at the track.

My advice is to read stuff on this forum and your Starquest forums and make up your own mind. Since you haven't started your project yet, you're pretty much a blanck canvas. Most of us have started gathering parts or have completed the swap and use what we have. It's your car and do what you want with it.
