'86 Hyundai Stellar 4G63 swap

Post by StellarDOHC »

I have been planning this swap for as long as i knew it was possible. And i have finnally started it thanks to this and other sites. The car is Canada/Euro market only but i think the US got the very similar Hyundai Pony. The engine is a Hyundai 4G63 from a 95 Sonata i scored for around 300bux for the whole car. I'm going to be running Megasquirt V2 PCB 3.0 loaded with the MSExtra 2.0.1 firmware to control spark and fuel. I purchased a RWD intake and water housing relocation kit from a fellow Zero G member, and i had to cut the firewall to fit the CAS at the rear of the head. I am currently making the panel to cover the hole in the firewall and i am thinking of making it so the CAS can be removed without having to pull the engine.

I have pictures and info on my CarDomain page here http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2831970

I'm not too familiar with the 4G32, but shouldn't the oil pan fit the 4G63 block? And the motor mounts should also work. This is all assuming that Mitsubishi kept the same basic block design. If the RWD sump pan from the 4G32 does work, then that would be a good option for us to have for swaps. Got any pictures of the oil pickup tube and pan for us to check out?

And since the Stellar didn't come here to the states, is there another car or truck that might have some of the same options? What transmission does that thing have? Is it the KM132 (or whatever) that is in the Mighty Max/D50? Give us some more info! :D

The only really similarity between the 4g32 and the 4g63 is they have the same bellhousing bolt pattern. The 4g32 uses a 5 bolt flywheel/crank, and because of the balance shafts, the 4g63 is wider, its also a bit longer so the oil pan is a no go. I think i have the km132 i have seen pics on here and they look identical. The motor mounts are also different in terms of bolt spacing (4g63 mounting holes are wider apart) and again the width means the mounts need to be shorter for the '63. I too was hoping the oil pickup tube would work but the tube dia is less and the mounting flange is diff also. The only part im going to be using off the 4g32 is the plate that goes between the trans and engine. So far i have made an oil pan and modified the motor mounts, i still have to modify the 4g63 oil pickup and either make a water pump inlet or get a d50 pump. I can take come pics of the 4g32 stuff but like i said its all pretty different.

Interesting... I too have a stellar (1987, so it uses the counterbalanced SOHC 4G63 2.0), and on top of all that, I have a 1984 Pony (not available in the US) WITH THAT SOHC 4G63 in it! I had no problems putting in the 4G63 where the 4G32 was: everything bolted right in! The stock Pony mounts were reused. Keep in mind, this is the exact 4G32 that was used in the Stellar.

Here's my Stellar 2.0

Here's my friend's 1986 Stellar (with 1987 front end) with a 4G63T in it.

He redid the entire suspension too, I can't wait to race him in my 2.4L DOHC Pony!

Also, if you got that engine out of an Elantra, it's actually a 4G67 1.8L DOHC. I know, I'm mating that head to a 4G64! (or G4CS for Sonata 1988)

Nice work.

I'm still waiting to see a mark 1 Excel done up with a 4G63.

Yeah now ur the second guy saying the 4G32 and 4G63 use the same mounts, maybe its cause my engine was a from a hyundai? Oh and its not from an Elantra it was from a 95 Sonata, its was pretty easy modding the Stellar mounts to work with new engine, and it allowed me to mount the engine as low as possible although im still not sure if the hood will shut w/o mods. I think i know ur buddy i could not see his car in the link cause im not a member but if hes the same guy as on CarDomain ive chatted him up alot and got alot of useful info from him, great guy. Haha i like how we all are rockin HIDs, cept it looks like im the only guy with the old school frontend and HIDs. My project is kinda on hold for now but i hope to be rollin next spring. Good to hear from a fellow Stellar guy.

Yeah that engine in the Pony (the stock 4G63 Stellar 2.0) is from one of his parts cars. We installed it one summer afternoon (take pony motor out, put aside - take stellar motor out of stellar, set aside, swap pressure plate - pilot bearing - put it back together and iron out the differences 10 hrs later...) He's a cool guy, mechanic by trade.

Do a search on facebook for him.... he's there. James T, in bowmanville.

I tore out a rearend from that same parts stellar and am installing it in one of my other ponys because, well, the suspension (body roll) is just awful. I have a 1987 Stellar (the one with the inferior macpherson struts - but superior 4 point multilink out back) and the difference in handling is night and day... also in comfort.

I also have HID's on my stellar2. They're awesome!

I've been meaning to ask you, I have a black and red theme going on in my engine bay, and currently my rocker cover sucks (paint is fading after 5 years) and I'm too lazy to repaint it. I really liked the one you had on your 4G32... could I buy it off you? Also, hold on to the flexplate and carby, i'll take those off your hands too... is it manual choke?

just email me at ponytuner(the wicked 'at' sign)hotmail. com

You have a SOHC carburated 4G63? What parts do you need! I have a complete running engine, i'd be willing to part it out (because I won't need it any longer)

I've only ever seen one 4G32 belt driven... it was in a guy's slammed pony pickup truck (also carbed) that he had swapped in.

The 4G32 and 4G33 (as well as the 1.2L version, I think 4G36) that were used in the Pony/Stellar are ALL chain-driven. I've not ever seen a belt drive in a Pony otherwise.

The carb that's attached to the 4G63 is OK, it needs the a/f adjuster tightened as it moves around a bit. I have another 4G63 carb, but let me tell you, it's suitable ONLY for parts/rebuild. The autochoke works on both though... maybe the other one needs cleaning?

I also have a bunch of good 4G32 carbs (will fit onto the SOHC 4G63... infact, doing the opposite was a popular mod back in the day!) if you want those.... PM me, they're not really doing much these days!

I don't have any good pics of my project car, but I have this short video of my Rochester powered 4G32 (race cam 246, 0.5 inch lift, lightened flywheel, recurve digital ignition, MSD, full exhaust, etc)

Nah same situation as u, my car is parked outside, so i wont be working on it till spring. I'm always thinking of ways i want to do stuff, I am thinking i wanna go turbo after seeing how oldcolt75 thought of flipping the stock turbo header with an adapter plate prototype he made from wood. Of course my engine is not a turbo one, so id have to run low boost or change out the pistons, but i do have a turbo manifold. In fact it was your idea i think to use the turbo manifold without a turbo to solve my exhaust dilemma. But it all depends on how much money i have to spend by then.

He also advised me to do the same: and I will!

Heh, if you want, I have a stock (BRAND NEW) headlamp housing for the stellar... I think passenger side.

It's been sitting in a warehouse forever... do you want it?

Bumping an old thread. I was wondering if any of you stellar guys cou,d answer some questions. Are the 4g63's in those a rear sump? If so, anybody know where I can get an oil pan and pickup?

If you have the earlier front double wishbone suspension you have to fabricate the oil pan and pick up tube. Newer front strut suspension model Stellars have front sump engines. Hope that helps.

My swap is into a e36 BMW sedan. I've fabricated a rear sump pan, but if I could find one that is factory rear sump, it would be a lot easier. I just wasn't sure if the Stellars came with a rear sump pan or not.
