water pump ?

Post by hankhawk »

Does anyone know if the water pump for the sohc 4g6x (MD143573) will fit a 2g 4g63t?

As far as I know (based on trucks and vans), the SOHC motors have a spring timing tensioner which uses parts of the SOHC water pump to hold the spring. So the SOHC that I've seen are not the same. Also, something that might be a RWD thing is that the water pipe that runs under the exhaust manifold is smaller so where it goes into the water pump is smaller too.

What models does the SOHC motor you're using come from? We could look it up on CAPS to see if the part numbers match the trucks or the DOHC cars.

Getting the engine bolted in is about 10% of the way there.

That last 10% takes about as long as the 90% that came before it.

The answer is yes to all 3 questions, although you will need to do some grinding to the pump to get the timing tensioner pulley arm to clear, and you will have to find a way to set the pump pully at thew correct height. I eye balled it, ad tacked it in place, has been mint for almost 2 years now.

I held a 1G pump up to a 2G block and none of the holes lined up.

With all that being said, is there a rwd water pump that will bolt to a 2g engine? Maybe from a later model truck or van.

People who are swapping them, it is pretty easy and you just need a press and a die grinder/dremel.

Jeffball... there is a 7 bolt RWD water pump that came on the later 2.4L trucks.

You can modify RWD pumps to clear the timing parts on the DOHC motors which is documented on this board somewhere. I used a table saw.

You can modify FWD pumps for better RWD usage by removing the freeze plug and putting in a pipe or cutting off the end and welding one in. Can save you from having a water pipe from the back of the engine, but its not required.
