Hello! I just picked up a vintage Colt and can't wait to throw a 4G63 in it. I am very excited to play around with a RWD 4G63 project. I have had plenty of DSM's in the past (1g, 2g, Galant, CSM, you name it), so 4G's aren't anything new to me. My last toy was a Colt GT that some of you may have seen at the Shootout last year. It ran a very traction limited 13.2 @ 116mph on a stock motor 16g setup. I loved that little car, but blew the stock trans at the end of last season. It has been sitting ever since and I had all but given up on DSM's for a while when I came across my newest toy on Craigslist.
It is a '76 Dodge Colt from California. One owner car with a little rust, but was very well cared for its entire life. I can't wait to dig into it this winter. Here are a couple pics of both rides, let me know what you think!
That's a clean Colt you have. Well, both Colts. I've got a Colt GT 4G63T and it's a blast. I haven't really done anything to it other than intake, exhaust and SAFC II stuff. I hate open diffs too.
Were you running a CSM trans or the FWD DSM trans? The DSM one should be little better suited for drag racing, but I know the CSM unit is pretty strong. How'd you break the tranny? Wheel hop, power shift etc? Let us know how the project goes. Post your progress in the Project thread area and we'll follow along and help when we can.
Welcome aboard the RWD 4G63 bandwagon.
Do it in a Datsun!
1972 Datsun 510
7-bolt 4G63T, EVO 9 pistons and rods, Garrett GT3076R, "flipped" stock intake, Toyota R154, Z31 R200 w/ CVs
I can't say that it has NO rust. There is some under the rear window, but it is only surface.
And I was running the factory KM210 in my hatch. That car saw wheelspin daily in 3rd and in 4th on race gas, so I'm sure the clock was ticking. That car is currently in pieces and has been put on hold while I restore the yellow one.
Thanks for all the positive comments, guys. I am super anxious to start modding the yellow car. I have a few ideas on how I want to do things, but just have to wait on money.
I actually plan on running an 8.8 that I have lying around. I will probably narrow it and mini-tub the back of the car so that I can fit some nice wide street tires on there.
I'm not giving it to the drag god. I just want to be able to squeeze something like a 9-10" wide Work Equip 01 with a really low offset (or 02 if I find one! yeah right) so that I can have decent traction and a ballin' lip.
Interesting...I will have to do some measuring when I get the chance. I would LOVE to not have to do anything crazy to fit a big tire. I will be building this car primarily for the street, but might want to throw on a slick occasionally. I imagine one of the reasons Peregrine mini-tubbed his car was because of the height of the slick also.
PS, do your rear windows roll down? Mine look like they should, but there is no handle.

hahahaha i always wonderd about the windows .. it was a feature of the galants .. they were cheap with the US ... and peregrine had a differnt car than we do its you, me, and ian
this^^^ you guys have more room than i did. i could brely squeeze a 22x5 in there stock
I have a 15x6 inch weld draglite in the rear w/ 205/65r15 on it. It rubs a little on the outside lip, but with the right offset wheel you could probably run a true 9 inch tire. My friend had steel wheels cut and re-welded to fit the right offset.
