SOHC thermostat housing water outlet

Post by Eric »

I was at the junk yard and noticed the SOHC engines have a different thermostat housing water outlet, one that would clear the firewall a lot better. So, I bought it and tried it out. It fits to the thermo housing just the same as the DOHC part, but doesn't sit angled towards the firewall like the DOHC part.

Not sure if anyone else has stumbled upon this.

if thats the case the 1.8 sohc galant housing might be better i dont think it has the radiator cap on it so you can use the fill on the radiator

True, unless the top of your radiator is lower than the housing. I expect most people would want the pressure cap on the thermostat housing.

Thanks for reporting your findings, Eric; I find that to be a big help. I may forget about routing the coolant throught the front altogether as you're helping me make my decision. Though, I still like the idea of running the big line from the thermostat housing under the intake manifold instead of by the exhaust manifold.

If I find a galant at the yard I'll pick one of those up since my radiator is higher. Although I do like to have the cap in back so I can fill the radiator to a certain point with the cap in back removed and thus letting air out. If that even really helps when filling, I'm not sure...

I'm not exact on the year, but it was a 1G T/E/L DSM SOHC (that you normally pass up just after popping the hood :) ).

whoa sweet! Now that's just less money I have to spend on the thermostat housing relocator thingamajiggy. Looks like I need to run out to the boneyard tomorrow. I need some new sensors anyway cause mine are all crushed and broke on the housing I have now.

Why not? It would be easy enough to just route the water line under the manifold or to the other side of the engine.

I am kind of shocked that this hasn't come up before. I have been using this thermostat housing for quite some time now, I am sorry I didn't bring it to everybody's attention sooner! Just be sure you use the air bleeder on the thermostat housing when you install it, because air gets trapped in there very easily, and it pukes out antifreeze if you don't get it all out. Here are some pics of my setup (in the spring time, its a little cleaner now)

That's what I'm running in my truck, I thought I had made a post about it here, but I must have posted it on mightyd50.com only. I picked over a 1993 laser with the 1.8 liter, and it had the same thermostat neck that will parallel the firewall making installation just a little bit easier.

David

Edit, in the pictures, the stock 4g63t housing is on top, you can see how the non-turbo outlet lines up better against the firewall.

you know? you can lead a horse to water, but you cant make him drink!
DJ has proven you can use the front exit for the cooling, there is no need for the rear exit , if you know how its done, yeah you gotta change the coolant flow , but thats two holes.
thats what Hod Rods are all about, trying new stuff differnt ways.

I think this thermostat info is GREAT to have around. The more options the better. if it fits without moving the engine forward at all, then I'm all for it!

Getting the engine bolted in is about 10% of the way there.
The next 80% can go quickly with help and skill.
That last 10% takes about as long as the 90% that came before it.

Ontop that, if I go out the rear, I can clean up the front of the engine. I'm thinking about fiberglassing the timing cover so there are no holes there (ie the engine support bracket that also connecs to the A/C will be coming out)

My plans are to cut it off flush with the t-belt cover and paint it black.

and the outlet sits further back than that

Sorry Bill, for not sticking to the front-exit solution. I decided that having to worry about the head cooling on top of everything else was just too much to handle in one shot.

Here's another pic, showing the room it takes up. As you can see it sits no further back than the lower portion of the thermostat housing.

I still can't figure out where the hell that oil is coming from:

I think that the oil is coming from the bolts in your rocker cover. There is two types with different lengths and the centre ones are different.Maybe try swapping these around.

It could also be from an old hardened oil cap seal.

Yep, I am leaning towards the bolts. I am using bolts that I picked up from the hardware store. Thanks. Sorry to take the post off-topic...

I can pick some up at my junk yard. I know they will have some of these. The only problem is that I won't be able to go till next weekend since there's no way I can make it to the yard in time on a week night.

the ones that will sit parallel to the head are off a 4g37, no part number listed on ASA. Find a 4g37 powered vehicle, such as a '89 DSM (Flat hood, no camshaft bulge), or Galant, or whatever else came fitted with that motor.
