water pump pulley problem -solution found-
hey guys, i just went outside to put all the pulleys and belts on my g63, and since im using the jay racing front water outlet kit, the dsm water pump pulley doesnt clear the bottom of the outlet by a good 1/2 inch. was i supposed to use the truck w/p pulley and the truck crank pulley?
thanks in advance

heres my solution! after searching at the junkyard, i came across a 96 galant that had a small 4 rib pulley, originally meant to connect from behind the water pump pulley to link and spin the p.s. pump pulley which was also 4 rib.
so now what im going to do is pull the wp mount so that the offset of the smaller pulley lines up with the rear crank ribs.
i wonder if this smaller pulley would cause damage to the wp bearings, since its pretty much an underdrive pulley now? i really have no choice so im going to go with the for now.
i mounted it up and it has beautiful clearance!
left- the stock dsm v belt pulley that goes behind the main wp (big pulley)
right- the galant serpentine belt pulley that mounts behind the main wp (big pulley)

so now what im going to do is pull the wp mount so that the offset of the smaller pulley lines up with the rear crank ribs.

galants are a dime a dozen here, if you want next time i go to the junkyard, i can grab you one just pay me what i would pay for the pulley and shipping. ill be more than happy to help you out, just let me knowStellarDOHC wrote:Wow im glad i read this post because it seems i am in the same situation, does anyone know if the truck w/p will help anything? i dont think i am going to find a galant in my local yards but i have seen a few d50's. Luckly i dont have p/s so all i need is a smaller w/p ribbed pulley.

Can you post a photo of everything together and the belt installed?
Sounds like you'd be over driving the pump rather than under driving it if you went with a smaller water pump pulley.

Getting the engine bolted in is about 10% of the way there.
The next 80% can go quickly with help and skill.
That last 10% takes about as long as the 90% that came before it.

ok, so i decided to use the outer ribs on the crank pulley since the rear ribs have the degree notch that would get in the way of the belt for the water pump pulley. plus i wanted to leave the rear ribs free so when i figure something out for my p.s. mount, i can still use them.
so this is what i did.
1st i extracted the pulley mount about 1/8 of an inch from flush

next since the pulley wasn't out far enough i decided to use washers to space it out to the desired position. i ended up stacking 3 washers per stud, which left enough for the inside hole of the water pump pulley to still touch the flange.

this is how nice the pulley ended up lining up nicely to the outer ribs

this is how i decided to route the belt, crank, alternator (relocated), and ofcourse the water pump.

If I remember correctly, the larger pulley for the water pump is offset. Can you mount it to were the flange is the "wrong" way and get the desired alignment for the belt instead of using spacers or pulling out the pump flange? If I can find my pulley and get out to the garage I'll take a picture of what I mean. I'm not sure how much clearance you'll get or if it will even work, but it's a thought.
Do it in a Datsun!

When I went with the truck pump and the big pulley, I had to give the pulley more offset in a press (moved the pulley closer to the block).
Just putting that out there.
Not the same as using a smaller pulley from a different application (power steering pulley) like you have done but I'm just posting this so people know we're comparing apples to oranges.
