honestly if your gonna waste your time with a 7bolt motor then you should go with a 92-94 short block with the 95-96 head this way you have less of a chance to crank walk and you can run the 2g style cam and crank triggers.
your gonna have to run a 2g engine harness too. ive found 7 bolts when they run good to be a great street car motor they rev much faster than a 6 bolt and seem to have a broader power band. this is stock 6bolt for stock 7 bolt with minor bolt ons.

88 conquest 4g63 now sporting a crankwalked boat anchor
i was thinking of doing so..i actually have an entire 95 gsx donor car and im grabbing everything i need from it (got the car for 500 so what the hell)screemin eagle wrote:honestly if your gonna waste your time with a 7bolt motor then you should go with a 92-94 short block with the 95-96 head this way you have less of a chance to crank walk and you can run the 2g style cam and crank triggers.

what i think i'll do is look for a wideblock 6 bolt and just use the head from this 2g along with the wiring, etc.
i've only had the starion for 2 months so im kinda new to all this so i appreciate any help to avoid any costly errors.

The motor pictured is a 95-96 motor. The head is the give away. Look at the thermo housing and the valve cover. All JDM motors say Mitsubishi as far as I know. You can also inspect the oil pan to see if it has the indintation of the 7 bolt design.
There is no downside to the 7 bolt motor. Crank walk has been an issue, but you can walk a 6 bolt, so don't use that as an excuse. Also, the 7 bolt crank is stroger than the 6 bolt as well as having better main girdles. The head in stock form is also a superior design.
It is a fact that the rods are smaller and cannot handle the power of the 1G rods, but this is not typically a limiting factor on a good tune. Many people have made 400+whp on stock 2G bottom ends. And the increase in driveablility and power band is mostly due to the higher compression ratio of the 2G piston design.
If you have the chance to take the 2G wiring harness, do so. You can run an EVO 8-9 ECU and simply reflash the chip for tuning instead of messing with EPROMs and burning chips. The EVO ECU is also easier to obtain than the 2G EPROM. If this is a route you're interested in exploring, go for it. Some of us are stuck with 1G stuff that is cheap and easy to obtain, but is limited in future product development and support.

this is great info! i took out the entire wiring including the ecu (still have the entire car) i had no idea i could run an evo 8 ecu...(have plenty of experience with it...my 01 galant is running an evo 8 ecu that's been flashed)jeffball610 wrote:The motor pictured is a 95-96 motor. my only concern now is mating the narrow block to the tranny...i know my options but would rather keep the starion tranny.

I have no experience with the Starion tranny, but everyone I know seems to feel they shift like a truck transmission. I also here they are not reliable above 400hp. Maybe all of this info is wrong, but just what I've heard. I'm sure DJ or someone has some good info to add. Also, you might be able to sell that trans and get yourself a Toyota unit and Bill's bellhousing without being out much cash. Toyota units are cheap, have lots of aftermarket support and can handle a good amount of power. A lot of this depends on your budget and plans for the car. Maybe make yourself a Pro/Con checklist and see which column wins.
