Mid 2 Early 90s (Hatch Style) FWD Colt.

Post by blue_crush »

I Saw 2 at the DSM shootout last year, with the 4G6X and I thought that was bad ass! So Im looking for links or comments on the pros and cons, as far as the build is concerned. Like....
will the motor just drop right in?
with the stock DSM tranny 5sp. work (fit) in it?
will the stock axles spile up? if so how will they hold up?

Im not lookin to make a race car or anything crazy out of it. Just something to have fun with. But I know it can be done! I Seent it

I picked one up a few months back. The only downside is that it uses 90 DSM stuff which can be hard to come by at times. (like the tranny) Also, just driving around town can be a pain at times. There is so much power to weight, that it's easy to get torque steer. You'll probably make a lot of compromises by driving the car. Mine is lowered and has a 3" exhaust. Not a good combo for speed bumps or potholes. However, I love the car. It's so unassuming. The only giveaway is the loud exhaust. I'll try to post some pictures soon just for everyone to see.

I've got a 90DSM FWD transmission I've been trying to sell for years!!!

Getting the engine bolted in is about 10% of the way there.
The next 80% can go quickly with help and skill.
That last 10% takes about as long as the 90% that came before it.

Fwiw, the 90 dsm trans isn't the same as the trans in the 4g61t cars(km210). An lsd insert or a real lsd will help the torque steer alot.

Actually the DSM trans uses a FWD flywheel and the Colt unit uses the AWD flywheel. They mate up the same and use the same type of axles. The Colt passenger side axle is slightly shorter, but you can pick one up from the auto parts store. Make sure you use turbo axles and transmission if you swap into a non turbo car.

The difference in the 90 style trans is mostly in the shifter location. The shifter linkage on the trans itself is different along with the shifter cable mounting holes. I'm sure you can retrofit a newer trans, but just be forewarned. Also, the Colt runs a 90 style ECU and wiring harness. The only real issues with running 90 style stuff is it was only made in 89 and 90. It's a little harder to come by, but not impossible to find.

Check out the 4G61T forums and most of your questions can be answered there.

I checked it out, their is alot of info on that site. thanks for the info. The only real problem i see is finding one close by, or cheap, or in good shape. As far as the swap it looks to be alot easier then what im doin now, so i will put this idea on the backburner for now. Unless.. i happen to find a hatch syle colt.

I jsut stripped a 89 turbo colt and had tons mailing me for the axles and intermediate shaft.
They ONLY fit the turbo models from what I'm told.
I'm stripping a awd talon tomorrow for the wire harness and rear suspension, and just saw a silver/blue colt hatch at a local yard here (near Memphis) Probably cheap.
I have the colt close ratio trans still, Only 102k on it.. Look on the 4g61 site in the for sale (by 77 amc) and look back around 2-3 months, it'll have pics.
