hello everyone, new member
hello everyone, I am a new conquest owner as of november, I have been lurking here and at austarion.com for a few weeks now, figured I would finally register and say hello to everyone.
please excuse the screen name, it just makes it easier to have the same screen name for every forum...I imagine you guys will be easier on me then the guys at the mustang forums
to introduce myself...my name is Joe Riley, I own and operate a small dyno/speed shop in Rhode Island, and have been into Honda's about as long as I can remember...I've been getting pretty sick of FWD lately and just honda's in general, so I have been looking for a new toy/project and I think I have finally found it.
I just picked up a 1987 Conquest TSI (I'll post pics if you want) in pretty good shape...kinda fell into my lap, I was looking for a 77-78 280z, but this kid literally drove into my shop and offered to sell me the Conquest for 300.00 $ (yes!!)
it runs pretty good, needs a turbo (not making much boost) which I will be replacing with a garrett T3 (tiny, I know), and the body is straight and it is really alot of fun to drive, even without boost!
I've got the engine swap options narrowed down to two totally different options ...4g63 and big boost or ford 302 with a procharger.
I really want to stick with a 4cyl powertrain for this car, I am a little confused about some of the engine configurations for these cars (mainly wideblock/narrowblock and which years/vehicles these motors came in) so if anyone has any links so I can do some more research to keep the noob questions to a minimum
anyway now that I have rambled on this long, I just wanted to introduce myself and wish everyone a Happy New Year, and thanks for reading this long first post

Welcome aboard, Joe! I am fairly close to you (Mass). I used to race at Seekonk in my Green Talon years ago.
I am actually using a hybrid tranny (88 Starion guts with 89 Mighty Max bell housing). This allows me to adapt DSM 4g63 to the Starion tranny. But it isn't all that staright forward... Check out my site for more info.

well I'm no mitsu expert by any means, so I am kind of planning on having this project take place in a few major steps...the first one being replacing the turbo and enjoying the car a bit with the g54b...while stock piling parts to perform the swap kinda all at once ish...and I'm hoping to keep the stock starquest trans at first (just cuz I'm a noob and it's one less thing to think about) and then if power out put or breakage requires me to change transmissions I have access to some toyota w 58's and some fc rx7 stuff so who knows...certainly not me...not yet at least
so given those "plans" and the research I have done so far...please correct me if this is a totally bass ackwards way of doing things...I'm thinking that a wideblock 4g63 or 4g64/3 would be the engine of choice, and that a 1st gen eclipse would be the donor car, for the internals. head, and wiring harness and ecu.
this would leave me with the option to swap it in with the stock starion trans, and then upgrade down the road to the rx7/mazda stuff if need be
so right now, the details I am a little stuck on are...I know that the 1g 2g eclipse 4g's are a narrowblock...what about the automatic motors...I thought I read they were a wideblock? I mean what is really the best donor car? or donor motor combo?

GRNDSM,
I just saw that your from MASS. what part are you from? my parents are in Fairhaven, and I used to autoX back in the day at the AFB on cape cod, and at Ft devins in Ayer
what is your website addy? mine is www.ondemandperformance.com
edit: nevermind, I found your website...that tr7 must be sick! did you ever get it up and running? if so how does the electric wp work out for a street car?
that is some impressive work so far, I'd really like to see that car in person, I've always been a fan of tr7's

Getting the engine bolted in is about 10% of the way there.
The next 80% can go quickly with help and skill.
That last 10% takes about as long as the 90% that came before it.
you know DJ, I saw that sticky...there are just so many g63b/g64 motors that it 's almost a little overwhelming for me...I just hate being new to something and not having all the right answers in my head already
so it looks like the best motor would be the g63b out of the 87-89 mighty max? and then swap on the 1/2g dohc head?, and use the 1g engine harness and ecu
I was really hoping to find a wideblock 4g63 turbo motor from the jap or aus starion, but that probably will never happen...so it looks like I will try to piece something together with the MM g63b and a 1g eclipse donor car.
I appreciate the links and the help guys...I really am trying to keep the noob questions to a minimum, I'm just so excited about all this, that I want to start getting parts together, but don't want to waste time and money looking for the wrong parts...gonna have to some junk yarding this weekend, see what I can find, and let the project take shape once I have some parts to work with

My opinion has always been to go with a 4G64 wideblock. Easier to find than a 2.0 wideblock and forged pistons cost the same regardless of the bore, timing belt is probably the same price and you can remark the 2.0 timing gears. Free displacement upgrade.
The only advantages I see with the 2.0 wideblock is that you can use stock cast eclipse pistons in it.

4G64 or G64B. Measure under the back of the block between the oil pan and bellhousing to find out if its a narrow or wideblock.
