Getting 4g63 ready for RWD

Post by NateFrame »

Hey guys,

this is my first post on this fourm. I started my project about 2 months ago when i got fed up with my FWD DSM. A friend said make it RWD, and I said what the hell, might as well.

I had no ideas for a front suspension at the time, so I put that on the back burner for awhile. So in the mean while I have been working mostly on the RWD oil pan, with a side of turbo flipping/clocking.
Here are some pics...

Wecome to the forum!

Looking great so far! Do you have photos of the new oil pick up?

I made a similar oil pan from BR's old oil pan:

Also, are you totally set on the FWD DSM body? There are some really good bodies which are much more attractive and unique (but lack in the engine department). And this is coming from a 1G fan, who had his first Eclipse GSX in '91 :).

RWD DSMs have been done quite a few times now, and if you are not running 8s on one of those, you aren't considered fast :).

May I suggest something like: Starion, RX7, 240SX, Z3 or even a Miata? :)

I also think you're off to a good start, but question your oil pan if you're keeping the DSM front suspension. The steering rack is mounted to the firewall and will severely limit your RWD options. I don't know what others have done, but this is something to think about. I also thought about a RWD conversion on a FWD car, but figured I could pickup an AWD shell cheap enough not to justify it. The steering rack is still a concern though. What plans do you have so far besides run a RWD 4G powered car? I love to see new ideas and see what others are thinking of. It's also interesting to see how people attack the same situation in different ways. That being said, the oil pan looks great.

You don't want to do it in a FWD car, trust me... been there done that.

You'll be welding all winter.

i have been think more and more about a mustang 2 front end. Many hot rodders use them in their cars.

A plasma cutter can remove any shit thats in the way and i dont mind welding at all. After a day of sitting a cubical, there is nothing better than coming home and getting dirty.

I would love to get a much better car to start with, but my old man wont let me give up on the project.

I would love to see pics of others rwd 4g63 swaps. Ideas for front suspension? Is there another subframe that will install with little modification?

thanks

I understand and admire the entire “not giving up” thing, but there are some projects that shouldn’t have been started! Figuring it out and changing the course is also a good quality!

But this is an example of a similar car (this is a RWD 3000GT):

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... 0215157519

You might get some ideas, as he must have faced similar challenges that await you.

But I want you to notice something, a he barely got bidding up to $8k and wanted $35k! What does that tell you? He probably had well over $35k into that project, but it isn’t something that people want. I am not saying that you will make money on most of these swaps, but why handicap yourself so much?

Also, there at least 4 RWD 1Gs, and they are all purpose built, VERY fast drag cars. So fast drag car has been done. If you want a RWD DSM to drive around, I can tell how to modify an AWD center diff to make it RWD ;). This will be much easier! :).

well nate , with that oil pan your gonna need a front steer rack, what I mean about that is in where you place the crossmember
Its a big discussion with NASCAR guys whether to go with front steer or rear steer cars and what that is all about is , it changes how the ' Acherman ' works in your steering.
Acherman reffers to the angle of the spinde arms and its relationship to a turn, forgive my spelling if its wrong, but in your situation, you may give some thought to arrainging your steering rack at the front of the motor and turning your spindles around so that the steering arms on the spindle face forward
Then you ' may' place your front crossmember forward in the engine bay

Before you get into this front rack/ rear rack lets see some photos of the drivetrain sitting in the car. Will it need much trans tunnel work? How about the firewall? You might find that how it sits leaves enough room up front for a crossmember and rack. Making a crossmember shouldn't be too tough once you make up your mind.

Here is a picture I took of Slowboy's Eclipse at SEMA a few years ago. Maybe it can give some ideas:

Getting the engine bolted in is about 10% of the way there.
The next 80% can go quickly with help and skill.
That last 10% takes about as long as the 90% that came before it.
