All the oily, spinning bits

Scatter shields for D50/Mighty max based transmissions.

Post by GRNDSM »

As I was drilling through the Mighty Max bell housing on my tranny, I couldn’t help but notice just thin it is (~ seemed like 1/8” in some places) . I am sure that it is fine to handle 4G63 torque, but I certainly wouldn’t want to count on it if my clutch decides to come apart. Couple this with the extra thin tranny tunnel on my TR7 and proximity to my feet…

So I started looking at 3 Speed scatter shields to see which one might work on my tranny.

From the photos, it looked like the FWD scatter shield offers the most complete coverage for the RWD application. Just then, I saw that Harry was discontinuing the FWD scatter shields and selling for $79/shipped!

That was too good to pass up! I ordered one shield and I should have it fitted later this week.

Has anyone already try this shield?

Why, are you looking for another place to buy EVO 16G from?

Yes, they filled a void: scatter shields for EVOs and DSMs! And they make them out of stainless steel, which is an added bonus. However, they are not SFI approved (too much money), but since there isn't an SFI alternative, most track allow them instead.

However, I am looking to do this strictly from a practical stand point: I do not want to hurt my feet! :D

No problem, Bill ;).

This is a video of my friend's Galant (save and play it):

http://punisherracer.com/crash_high.ram

At the time, this was a low 12 second Galant. Which is a lot slower than where you are required to have a scatter shield! My friend ended up OK. But he was very lucky!

If something like this happens on a RWD car YOU WILL hurt your feet!!!

BTW, I was supposed to drive the Galant that night, but I couldn't make to the track...

I have to remind myself that folks down south are not as accustomed to sarcasm as we are in North East :). Sorry about that  It was just a joke.

Well, so much for that idea... It will definitely need some modifications and I might have to extend the "coverage" on the driver's side (RWD config) to better protect the driver.

Oh well, it was worth a shot... I will post the modificaitons later.

If its a tight spot and you can get it past inspection, I would beleive your best protection would be provided by the floor panels themselves.

If you could some how place a permanent scattershied in the floor pan, it would be a great savings on wieght and required maintence work in the future
