Brake master cylinder clearance

Post by jeffball610 »

So I finally got my new brake master cylinder and mocked it up with the new JMF intake manifold. There's just enough room to fit a business card without them touching. I'm sure this will change once the intake manifold gasket is on. The clearance issue is caused by an unused port on the master cylinder. Can I just plug this and grind it off? It does have a bleeder valve like the one that's on the rear port in the pictures. I don't think I need these and I can gain about a 1/4" or more clearance from doing this. Should I attempt this, or make arrangements for custom motor mounts?

Its a Datsun.. bend the firewall out of the way?

Looks like you could grind it down. Do you have a spare just in case I'm wrong?

Getting the engine bolted in is about 10% of the way there.
The next 80% can go quickly with help and skill.
That last 10% takes about as long as the 90% that came before it.

I agree, if it does start to leak, weld it shut, or JB weld. not sure JB would hold up though.

I was thinking of welding a bolt in to seal it. I'm just trying to figure out if closing this off will ruin the unit and not function correctly. The units themselves are not expensive at $25 a piece, but I'd hate to keep swapping them out if this doesn't work. Also, the units are made of aluminum and the heat from welding might weaken it or warp it if I'm not careful. Is this the route I should go?

The port is a bleeder to help "bench" bleed the unit. It is harder to bleed it without it. But it can be done. I just tightened the bleeder screw tight and chopped it off. No leaks and plenty of clearance.

there should be some kinda law against making something commmmmmmmmmmmme soooooooooooo close and still mess up a clean swap

have you ever taken a look at a Dodge van set up? they put a pivot at the end of the push rod and mount the master cylinder sideways

It is weird how they do some of these things. My Colt actually has the brake cylinder on the passenger side of the car.

I believe this was due to the cars being built in Japan, they only used one firewall stamping and just made it work for the markets that used a left hand drive.

the early Honda Civic was like that, they had a pivot bar all the way across the back of the firewall and the master cylinder was on the right side of the car, I believe to position it over the trans and away from the back of the engine

I need to find out a little more about this master cylinder that someone is using on their 510 project. The bleeders are on the other side I think. Here's a picture of what the guy has. I'm going to contact him and see if this is similar to what I want to do or if this is a different MC.
