Found! 89 turbo colt!!

Post by 77amc »

Hey guys n gals, I was at a doctors apt and on the way home i decided to stop by this older junkyard that I don't usually get to visit.
After looking through their large 'barn' of engines, I saw the tail end of a red colt and could just barely see 'turbo' on the back.
Well, besides all the glass busted out and the local fire dept using it for 'training' (whole roof was cut off) it looks to be all there. Well, maybe missing some small stuff..

What engines came in them? Is it just the 4g63? And in what size? 1600, 1800 or 2000?
Besides the engine and wiring, is there much of anything else to use for the quests??
Sorry for the noobie questions, but I don't want to join several other sites just to be told that I need to post 35x before I'm "accepted" (I can't rember all my passwords now!)

thinking of stripping it of all it's brakes.. (were they all 4-wheel discs?) and interior to get some money back. Or anything else for that matter...

Anyhow, let me know soon if ya don't mind, I'm picking it up Friday
Thanks guys..[/url]

The bad thing is there is several inches of water around truck and trailer.. :( And with all the large gravel I put in front of my shop, I'd really be suprised that if I even get truck and trailer out to pick it up, I may not be able to get it in..
Hey, since there are now wheels on it.. The bolt spacing is 4x100 isnt' it?
I hope so, Otherwise I won't even have a way to get it off the trailer or even tow it... :?

And what size engine is usually found in them please?

So, thank you very much for the site.. I'll give it a try

The Colt Turbo used the 4g61 1.6 liter DOHC engine.

I bought a Turbo Colt a couple months ago, and the only real advantage to any parts on that car are that you can swap the 4G63 into it. The car is light and unassuming. Most DSM parts will swap over, but as far as a parts car, don't bother unless you're building a Colt/Mirage turbo. The engine might be of some interest for parts to swap into a hybrid motor of some sort though.

Light and powerful? The engine is the same as the 4G63 but with a lighter crank (less stroke so I assume its lighter). and without balance shafts. Smaller turbo, but does that really reduce weight that much? Shorter deck height? Might lose a few pounds there. Nothing to get excited over.

Getting the engine bolted in is about 10% of the way there.
The next 80% can go quickly with help and skill.
That last 10% takes about as long as the 90% that came before it.

Yeah, the block is pretty much the same as a 4g63, the deck height is a little shorter, but the cylinder wall thickness makes up for that weight. The 4g61t is very stout and you can make some good power with it, just don't expect much off boost.

I'm Very Close to Memphis in the Northwest corner of Mississippi. The city of Olive Branch.
Is the suspension and brakes a 'upgrade' to the other colts?

Still havn't got it home yet, couldn't find rollers.. Maybe this week. They said that it will be OK and no one would be touching it, but ya never know.
I'm just not lookin foreward to vacuming out all that glass

Thanks for the help.

Well finally got her home and started pulling the dash apart.. And started thinking (Holy spririt telling me..) to just try and get it running.
Now 'they' told me that the engine and trans was bad but I know when people take stuff to the yard the yard doesn't really look into what they have. Well, here at least.

With a hot battery and some gas I found out that it would 'hit' with some starting fluid shot in the intake and run for a couple of seconds.. FUEL.. I dropped the tank and sure enough, rusted up pump. (aaahh, that's why the old fuel filter in the trunk..)
Had an extra HONDA pump, switched them and sputter, sputter.. VRRUUmm :D :D

Well, I drove it into my shop and wanted to take it around the block but thought that not to be the right thing to do.

I know Bill is busy with His projects but If he'll post the pics for me I'd apprectiate it..

Yeah, i think some people just don't know how to take care of their cars. Especially if it's a beater like the Colt. I love my car though. It's kinda scary doing 90mph on a 3rd gear pull and the car starts dancing a little on the highway. I think that might have just been my ball-joint I just replaced. I'll see how she drives in the next couple of days. I know it's tempting to run the 1.6L, but there's so much more you can get with a 4G63 swap. You can keep the 1.6L tranny and run an AWD flywheel, or drop in the FWD DSM tranny and flywheel. Check out http://forum.4G61t.org. There's lots of info on the car itself along with a swap section and stuff. Have fun.

And the clutch goes right to the floor.. Ibetcha it's the slave cylinder..
Ran out of time to check.
Most likely going to drop the whole front suspension with motor etc. and take a few other things but that's about it.

Hey, Can you swap out the starion quest turbo as an upgrade?
And it had AC plugs in it (the cheapest crap you can buy)
It was missing alittle..
Any sugestions? Plugs, wires..??? to smooth this out and it seems to just shut off around 4k. BUt if you feather it, it will run furthre.

OK, Now here's another option..
I have a 90 talon awd turbo that's missing an engine.
So to my understanding, this 4g61 will bolt up to that awd trans??
The colt's body is shot and at least the talon is still all there (NO glass all over) and can be locked.
It's not like I will get all goofy.. I GOT a AWD talon and go racing.
I would like to use it as a testbed and to learn more. (And it could move under it's own power)
From what I've read, it seems that it will..
Thanks E

Errol, it will bolt up just like the 4g63 will, and the 90 harness will plug right into the 4g61t electronics. This has actually been done before.

Great! I just need to get back there and make sure things don't go a missn
I don't know if I should start another thread for this but since it's a AWD trans, that makes the trans totally different right?

And if by some wild chance they would share some intenals, Has anybody swapped gear sets or final drives between the makes? Or would this just be more pain than worth

I just may take the talons trans apart because the bellhousing is cracked.
I don't know what actually caused this but since the engine was already gone I just figured that is was bad..
I might try and test the gear actuation of the shifter input shaft while turning the crank side and see if it grinds or not.
Thanks for the help.
