whose running megasquirt?
ive decided to run megasquirt because i dont plan on being 2.0 for very long. i didnt want to have to buy/install a 1g harness/ecu to later buy dsm link or even aem and spend more money to tune a 2.3. this is the most cost effective versatile option i see. so my question is for those of you that are running megasquirt, how are you using the trigger wheel setup? from what ive read on the diyautotune sight that it looks like you have no choice but to go that route but from what some1 told me there should be away to run the stock cas sensor, but i havnt found anything that supports that. other then the cas issue that the 4g63 has and from what ive read the ford has to have it as well, i think that they have edis or what not. anyways, lmk what youve had to encounter or tips im gonna need since im goin to be installing this in my car. thanks, Dan
so we use that sensor and just run it to megasquirt? i thought we had to run an actual trigger wheel like the g54b when running aftermarket ignition.. it makes sense now.. lol thanks for the clarification. now are you building your own megasquirt or are you buying it pre-assembled? if so are you also making your own harness?
I was going to try and use a stock StarQuest ECU housing to put the MS in, but just couldn't get it to work any way I would be happy with it. The main reason I wanted to do it is to get rid of the DB style plug on the MS, and use automotive style connectors. Maybe Kane will work it out for me, so I can get his old B71 car running MPI finally.

Wouldn't it be better for us to do a crank trigger wheel?
I've got a crafty solution that replaces the balance shaft sprocket with a MD128107 spacer with the trigger wheel added. This would keep the back of the head clear and the trigger wheel and sensor would be protected behind the timing cover. This would require eliminating the balance shafts of course.

Getting the engine bolted in is about 10% of the way there.
The next 80% can go quickly with help and skill.
That last 10% takes about as long as the 90% that came before it.

We're an unusual case though with the firewall interference issues.MadScientistMatt wrote:That's a good question. With the Starion motors, the distributor needs to be locked out so you're in for a bit of work either way, so crank triggers make sense there. With a 4G63, it's not quite as clear cut. A crank trigger would be more accurate in theory, but in practice the difference may not be all that huge. Usually I've advised 4G63 owning customers to keep whatever CAS they have.

I wish I could offer an EFI kit for RWD 4G64 DOHC people on here. Everything from the crank trigger to the wiring harness to the ECU with a tune.
Make a nice 400hp recipe for a cookie cutter 4G64 wideblock into a Starion using the stock transmission. Biggest problem is getting several people to do the same setup: injectors, turbo, exhaust, etc. Total cost would be high, but not as much as most 240SX guys spend on a SR20 swap.
Its also a lot of money to dump all at once and most people on here don't have the ability to save their money and THEN spend all at once rather than spend it as soon as they get it and realize a year into it they've got other priorities and sell off all their stuff for half what they paid for it.... RANT!
If only.... :-/

Megasquirt
Im am planning to swap a 4g63 from a '95 Hyundai Sonata into my '86 Hyundai Stellar. The Stellar is a RWD car, based on the Ford Cortina suspension platform. The pathetic 78HP 1.6 SOHC is making way for a real engine. Im also planning to run the EFI via Megasquirt, that im going to assemble from scatch basically. The goal is to turbo it and run a COP ignition setup. It would be nice to talk to sumone who has modified thier megaquirt to use the 1g CAS, i have read and re read instuctions for doing it but its still sumthin i don't exactly understand. Anyway im a long time visitor to this site and have finally joined up. Hope to have a good exchange of ideas from all u guys on here.

you guys wouldn't be using the stock ecu connectors. you'd be using the one provided by MS. then you can just run the stock 1g harness for the engine bay and wire up the MS connector. i've done that on an eclipse before. you just gotta get the MS with the dsm mods and it'll run the cas no prob. it's really no prob to get it all wired up. and you can run any 3 wire tps on it...so if your modding your intake mani already...you could run say, a big ass 5.0 mustang throttle body.

Looks like I'll be getting a chance to play with the Megasquirt system when I get back from my trip. The plan is to use a VR trigger on the front of the motor as I've described in other threads and run a wasted spark Coil on Plug setup similar to what I have on my racecar.
MadScientistMatt, is there a number I can call to pick your brain?
