trans..
Moderators: DJpowerHaus, mattmartindrift
The reason i asked, is because my laser rs is fwd and it wouldn't make sense to have 300hp to the wheels in something thats not possitive traction...hell this car already spins to much!! so if i swap in a awd tranny, and bypass the differential, making it fwd, then would be possitive traction?.....maybe i just need to do the starion swap!!!:)
There is always someone faster!!!
If I understand you right, you just want a locked or limited slip front differential? There is no reason to put the AWD trans in. You can just get a limited slip or spool for your front differential in your current transmission. To put the AWD trans in, you would have to have a center diff. spool too. Don't see the point?

I think I'll see jsut how different they really are when I cut up my 90 FWD and 91 4WD in the spring
. Who wants to come over and help with that? I'm in MD.

Getting the engine bolted in is about 10% of the way there.
The next 80% can go quickly with help and skill.
That last 10% takes about as long as the 90% that came before it.

Outside they look kinda the same...
But the internal reinforcing is not visible.
I have read stories about those that simply drill and whatever to install AWD.
The cars twisted and tore themselves apart.
To be done correctly, you need to swap the entire length of floorboard...
thats what subframe connectors and a 6 point cage are for B)

Cool. Death would be cooler. Any photos?
Dont let him stop you. I think he's exagerating (especially about the 1/2" reinforcment)... (plus you need to weld in mounting plates with any cage installation). The only way it maybe stronger is with another layer of stamped steel. Like I said.. I'll find out when I chop them up.

No... you simply do not get it...
If the frame was simply more rigid there would not be an issue with converting it...
The issues arise at key mounting points, and then stress lines from those mounting points.
It would be like bolting an anti-roll bar to the bed of a truck. If you do not continue to mount it to the frame and roll the truck over. That roll bar will simply push through the bed, buckle and fall to pieces doing nothing.
You are dealing with the same thing between the FWD and AWD DSM's. On the AWD the floorboards are up to 1/2" (and over in some places-I have been told) solid metal. The FWD's are not. You would be welding in plates for a month simply hoping that you thought of all the stress angles, and reinforced them. Never mind the actual mounting points reinforcement.
I have seen pics of a "simple swap" before... the transfer case was in the passanger seat. The rear end was lost. The rear axles were through the rear window, and protruding through the roof. The new center console was the intermediate driveshaft. And that was only with a 300 Hp 2600 RPM launch... The driver was wearing a helmet that saved his life from the driveshaft.
Need I say more?
sorry bud, your wrong. ive got a buddy here with a fwd spyder converted to awd and hes making well over 400 horses these days with no signs of stress on the conversion. i know the spyders are reinforced from the factory but not in the awd places your referring to. stiff chassis is stiff chassis no matter how you cut it. twisting force is what breaks chassis stuff. less twist=less breakage. 6point cage and subframe connectors=stiffness

2g fwd and awd are almost the same they are just missing 2 mounting points in the unibody for the awd subframes
if you were to do this an a 1g it would be much more involved than if your were to do it with a 2g
as for the awd tranny in a fwd the tranny doesnt fit the tranny case is bigger and you would have to eliminate the viscuss and weld the center diff or get a spool and it would still be an open front differential so your stuck with the one wheel peel unless you get a kaaz or a quife differential
hope this helps

do that, then get an lsd, firm ass suspension, poly motor mounts, slicks and some nice new axles from raxles.com. take it from a fwd dsm guy thats been in the game for awhile, you ll be fine. or as fine as you can be with fwd, just feather that clutch off the line, lol
any more questions you can get me at wickedtsi@gmail.com
