bellhousing development for T-56 trans

Post by Bill Hincher »

I been away for a while setting up new equipment
Image
I scored a CNC 2 hp bridgeport from some guy named ' Silky' at the BP gas station down on the corner, it was a gift from his god parents in Iowa, but he didnt really want to keep it and he had no receipt so he couldnt take it back to the store, I traded him a bag of magic beans for it
Image
Then, DSM pilot ( rocket man) found this T56 trans on Ebay from a guy in South Carolina who was laid off from NASA and is a shipping clerk for UPS
Image
As you can see there is a water shortage in South carolina so he couldnt wash off the first or second layer of grime before he shipped it
Image
what a shame, it could have save about 50% in frieght by being lighter
Image
from this fine example of custom made DETRIOT steel I shall make a bellhousing so the you all can have six speeds to propel you to the road of glory and drifter fame

mattmartindrift wrote:Bill, there are multiple T56s.

Make sure you know which one it is you'll be using.

I recommend the one from the LT1 Fbodies; they're more plentiful, easier to find, and cheaper and they still have about the same tq. rating.

I know to run an LT1 T56 on an LS1 you need a bellhousing swap, new slave cylinder, and input shaft.

P.S. glad to see 6speed development taking place for these!!

Keep up the good work in making RWD an easy viable option for the 4g engines!
thats exactly what i was going to do if the bellhousing was for an lt1 :D

I have heard this before :D

but the R-154 is just about the same size, I been busting my butt working on my shop and cleaning up some yard work.

I gotta finish the R-154's and then tackle this trans, it looks much easier than either the w-55's or the R-154 set ups

I will be posting the work I am doing on an EVO engine also

I am all for it as long as it is for the LT1 based T56 and a narrow block. Will it compatable with the fidanza flywheel?

the fidanza flywheel is made to replace the stock flywheel, so if it is set up for stock, aftermarket stuff should work fine

Perfect, you finish it before I sell my junk and I will be happy to dragstrip "test" it  . I already have the six speed buddy, just whip up that bell.
BTW my sugesstion would be to make it as small as you can as most of us old schoolers dont have big ass tunnels  .

it would probably be best to figure on making the tunnel removable, becuase this trans is gonna take up some room. But I would recommend a removable tunnel for any trans set up anyway.
the input shaft is high in the T-56, if you can get the engine lower in the engine bay, you should be ok with an original tunnel

I'll talk to you about this on our little trip.

Getting the engine bolted in is about 10% of the way there.
The next 80% can go quickly with help and skill.
That last 10% takes about as long as the 90% that came before it.

They are not that expensive. I sell them at my yard used for 1400.00. Besides, I likey the fast shifting low miles trans that can hold power vs the clunky 400,000 mile toyota one.

You just gotta look for deals! I got mines for $860 plus $175 shipped to Bill, altho shipping cost the guy $238.00  He took a bath on that one! It woulda been alot more expensive to ship it to me since i'm 2000 more miles away.

I have a feeling this is going to be a much cheaper solution than Chads setup. If you're wideblock you've got a few options. New people might want to consider narrowblocks more than we did a year ago.

btw, is there a narrow block 6 bolt 4g64? I was thinking maybe some of the early mitsu trucks might have them? I was thikning 4g64 4g63 crank for some good 2.1l goodness.
I'm sure there is since dsmers use them with the stock tranny's all the time.

If you want it cheap, look for hyundai G4CS.
YEAH IF YOU LIKE CRACKED BLOCKS GO WITH THE HYUNDAI JUNK!

you would be better off using the 2.0 block with a 2.4 crank and building a 2.3. you wont have head gasket issues. your timing cover will fit corectly and you can find everything easily g4cs are hard to come by

your high. the cranks are the weak spot on the g4cs blocks. you do realize they come from the same lace as the 2.0 right? saying theyre hyundai is pure rhetoric nonsense.

it all depends on the application, i found a couple of website that built remote shifters for the r 154, but mostly the was to make the shifter longer not shorter

basically what they did was to take the shaft that the shift lever bolts to and made it longer, then they welded up a housing

http://wwwrsphysse.anu.edu.au/~amh110/s ... _volvo.htm

I could see bolting a shift finger on to the trans shift shaft and connecting a shift handle where ever you wanted it, this same system could go forward as well as back

Ever seen the shifter on a 60's Cobra? Gansta. Actually, since I moved my seat back in the car (I'm 6'3") its kind of a reach to the stock shifter for me anyways, moving it back would actually help me to shift faster.

I just have the first drawings done and I have made an identical input shaft so I can align the pieces, I ordered some material for the manual jig.

I been filling out a note book on how I want to arrainge the machine steps after the pattern is cast.

Right now I am building most of my R-154 housings to pay some bills

Hah junk huh? I've had TONNES of experience with the mitsu engines in old hyundais (Im talking early 80's stuff) Never had a problem with a block. Ever.

I also know some of the old 4G stuff that sees boost... just use good oil or the passages will block. Trust me, 4G hyundai stuff is INDESTRUCTIBLE.

Also while we're at transmissions, you guys should know that Hyundai Stellar 1983-1986 and Hyundai Pony 1982-1987 use Borg Warner 03-55L auto trannies with detacheable housings. I myself am waiting for a local older lady's 86 Pony to have a breakdown (I might be waiting a WHILE) severe enough to warrant her scrapping it (thus giving it to me) upon which I will remove the trans, pull the housing, and let the mating begin!

I know it will bolt to a G54B, I almost bought such an engine years ago and I had such a housing, but I had different plans for the car so I threw the housing away when I moved. F*#K that was a dumb move.

In any case, Im in the midst of getting a G4CS and attaching it to a 4G67 head. that should be plenty of power to destroy my allready ailing KMH119 Trans...

I admire your patience in waiting for some old lady to die so you can get an automatic transmission for nothing
But I believe auto transmissions are for people with cup holders for thier coffee, so it dont interupt with thier cell phones.
there aint nothing like upshifting in the middle of a drift and hoping you dont spin out at speed. I guess its a 'GUY' thing

^^^^ Um yeah, waiting for her to die? That's disgusting. I was talking about the car.

Perhaps I made myself misunderstood: I will be using the bellhousing to attach the ENGINE to a MANUAL TRANSMISSION, perhaps something out of a 88-92 2.8/3.1 RWD Camaro.

this is the begining of the detail work on the T 56 trans, the first thing I wanted to do was invest al lot of time devoted to the starter location
Image
Image
I used the flat plate as my first datum line and find a center, then I located the center plate that the bellhousing would need to fit the flywheel properly
Image
I split up this outer ring in sections so I could build each section one at a time, to improve control over wall thickness
Image
It is hard to tell you how many hours it takes in just making decisions about where to start, where to locate, what thickness and anticipate all the decisions needed to make ahead of the next step, chess is a wonderful game :D
Image
There are two bolt patterns laid out although they are hard to see, but I used this flat datum plate to place the bolt pattern to the 4G63 and also the T 56 so I could keep the sides square with each other

instead of redoing the firewall, get yourself a auto starion chassis assuming you are putting it in a starion and a t45 will fit no problem. I thikn I could fit a cummings diesel transmission in this thing :)
hey i still got that spare colt sitting here. it needs a fender but is in decent condition other than that. PM if you want it. ill let it go for $200 you come get it.
