good start?

Post by madhatch »

I am going to but a quest or a starion here in the next month or so, I have decided (long ago) to replace the aged 2.6 g5 with a 4g63 or possibly a 4g63/4.
For a baseling what is the most efficiant way to start this, what tranny should I start with ect, I want o spend about 4k and have a quick dependable car. By quick I would like for it to compete with my civic 13.4 @ 101mph era. my ultimate goal is a low 12sec car that I can drive to work for under 10k, I know opinions are like awholes but the consensus is what I am looking for, mostly with the mounts and the tranny, widw block / narrow block.
I was thinking of ordering an evo engine from a dsm importer for like 2900 rated @ 270hp for starters. It was a 6 bolt motor. w/ trans ecu ect.

I'm pretty sure the Evos were 7 bolts. Usually when they say "Evo 6 bolt" they mean Galant VR4 engine. Its one way to go. Read over the site and you should start to form an image in your mind of what you want and what the best way to go about it is.

Getting the engine bolted in is about 10% of the way there.
The next 80% can go quickly with help and skill.
That last 10% takes about as long as the 90% that came before it.

Crankwalk is still a mystery. No one knows why it happens. Most believe it's just because of the piston oil squirters being on the main bearing area. I've also seen 6-bolt engines walk because of a poorly balanced flywheel. The 7-bolt DSM motor is actually better in alot of ways. The main girdle is better, higher compression pistons and even though it's a cast crank (i think) it doesn't seem to break at the #4 fillet like the 6-bolts do above 600whp. Then again, there's a lot less people running built 7-bolts, so maybe it just doesn't happen as often. I guess it's all a matter of preference.

only 7bolt cranks i know of that are not hardened are in the new stuff.

1&2g dsm's definetly have hardened 7 bolt cranks and the gaylants do also the evo guys buy the 2g stuff when they build their motors
88 conquest 4g63 now sporting a crankwalked boat anchor
