th350-short or long tail shaft?

Post by 89coltgt »

I am going to start looking for a th350 trans for my 89 mm 4g63 swap, is there a certain style that is better or more common? I just don't want to buy one, have the drivshaft modified and then not be able to find a replacement quickly if needed.

you can use either since you need a new driveshaft anyways. i went with the short one though.

I think he wants to know which is the most common so he can figure out what to get.

Getting the engine bolted in is about 10% of the way there.
The next 80% can go quickly with help and skill.
That last 10% takes about as long as the 90% that came before it.

im not sure. the long tailshaft ones usually came in vans and trucks and the short out of cars. theres no difference internally i dont think.

Yes, I was trying to figure out what is more common. Seems like the long tailshaft would be more common, scince there are quite a few old trucks around. I have someone who knows of a th400 trans that I could get ahold of, what are the diffences, gearing?

th-400 is for a heavy car or truck. you do not want one for this. they soak up ALOT of power. is this a mostly street car?

Yes, this will be mostly street. After talking with a v8 buddy I had come to the conclusion that the th400 isn't ideal for my application.

Hellow, the 350 short shaft would be the one to use.. It's very sturdy, there are just tons of HP parts for them, Tons of torque converters, Kits for hyd throw out bearings, easily adapted shifting cables with varing lengths, and some can be 'dual bolt pattern' for Chevy and B.O.P cars And if you want, you can swap in a 200r4 that will only need the rear crossmember mounting adjusted further toward the rear about 6", uses the same tail slip-yoke on the output shaft.
The truck trans is a little too long for my liking in a small application
AND THEY ARE DIRT CHEAP!! I've picked them out of cars for 50.00

how are you mounting the GM trans to the Mitsu motor?
Did Bill make one for them also?

Buschur Racing makes a gm auto trans plate for the narrowblock 4g63. I didn't know th350s had a throwout bearing

OOOppsie, Sorry, I"ve been messing with several trannys lately and got cornfused on what I was talking about..

But still the 350 I think would be the cheapest ($$) American trans to use.

It is a custom converter. You will have to run his, or have a shop make one, Edge racing is a good place to go for a custom converter.
