hey, i just registered, i like the site! it's like tristarion, so it's familiar!

anyway. you guys are headed in the right direction with the wide 2.4 as far as instalation ease goes.

BUT... you need to focus on the really cool/wicked/almost insane swap.

2.4 with 2.0 crank. i talked about this in some other threads on SQC or Tristar.

basically, i don't know a ton about it. but you use the 2.0 crank and it destrokes the 2.4 to 2.14, and while being larger than the 2.0 it has the ability to rev over 10 grand.

guys in the know have mentioned 12K rpms and possibly higher.

anyway, i think that's where the money is. i plan on doing one, but with the help of a local DSM shop, QPR.

anyway, good luck whichever way you go!

i'll be around here more often now :)

You may run into problems getting a starion transmission to shift that high. An Rx7 Turbo II transmission will bolt up to the engine though using a Mazda B2600 bellhousing.

have you actually done that tranny setup Mike? I thought someone else tired it, and it wouldn't work.

I recall someone on a DSM board trying to do that and he did bolt the bellhousing to a wide 4g64 block and was in the process of finding a TII transmission for it. I never heard that it didn't work. From what I've read from Mazda sources is that there are two types of RWD transmissions: the light and the heavy duty. The heavy duty consisted of the turbo rx-7, 929, B2600, and MPV. Within the heavy duty, only the bellhousing, tailshaft cases, and gear ratios are really different. Most of the guts of the transmissions are intercheable as well. Even if there was a problem with swapping bellhousings and tailshafts, you should be able to swap the guts of the Rx-7 transmission into the B2600 transmission like we do with the starion and mighty max. Both the b2600 and RX-7 are hydraulic clutches. The only question in my mind is the clutch/flywheel issue.

Where are you located TurboFusion? What's this car going to be used for and what's you time frame?

I've heard all about the 2.1.. there is even info on the site about it. The problems I see with it is how much can the head take? Do people actually make power above 9000rpm? Is it really worth the cost of aftermarket rods, pistons, titanium retainers, valve springs, kevlar timing belt, etc etc that you would need to take the head to those speeds? I just want to know, it does sound awesome if it can be made to be worth the money.

As for this transmission information... I'd LOVE to learn more about all that. I'm sure this wheel has been invented in the past as well.

If anybody does this I'll try to find some sort of reward. Maybe like $50 or something or some parts. I think alot of us have a stake in this and we should all contribute to some sort of a prize for a strong reliable transmission setup. I know my attempts so far have cost me $325 and I'm still not content.

Then all the info can be on the site so it wont need to be reinvented again. We're looking for a 500hp capable transmission choice. Who's up for a challange?

Getting the engine bolted in is about 10% of the way there.
The next 80% can go quickly with help and skill.
That last 10% takes about as long as the 90% that came before it.

You should setup a way to make donations on the site like tristarion and other sites do. The money could then be used to fund research and other public information.

I'd spend it all on crack and gas. Somebody win that contest and then I'll figure out a way to round up the cash.

well with an engine setup like that, you could enter a drift/road race contest, win and get money that way. ;)

i live in a suburb of minneapolis, MN. there is a local DSM board and several of the guys have the narrow 2.4 and are making HUGE power (one guy recently dyno'd at ~615 whp) stock crank, though. although, one guy with a 2.0 makes over 500.

if the RX-7 tranny fits, those engines rev to 9 grand, i wonder if i could get an rx-8 tranny (6spd). bwahaha. i work at a mazda stealership. that would cost a lot.
anyway, high shifting would be the reason to get that.

as far as power goes up high, look at F1 cars, they peak out at 18K. if the valves don't float, i don't see why you couldn't. you'd have to use lightweight valves, retainers and keepers, and strong springs with 1 or 2 inner springs.

as for pistons and rods, since the motor has been effectively de-stroked, those forces aren't as great.

another problem with the 2.0's and 2.4's is crankwalk possibilities. with a heavy clutch (you'd need it for big power) the potential for it to walk is higher.

Woah.. you just totally crossed the line with the F1 car statement. That's like comparing apples to Super Giant Stars. Totally different.

"F1 pneumatic valve train uses very high pressure air pump to contol valve closing times, and they are very expensive to use on regular automobiles. "

Also: <a href='http://www.indiacar.com/index2.asp?page ... engine.htm' target='_blank'>http://www.indiacar.com/index2.asp?page ... ine.htm</a>

Not that IRL and CART cars dont rev high with springs.. but the budget is just .. really high.. not that it isnt possible.. even on a DSM. But still.. dont compare it to an F1 car :-D.

But anyways. yeah... those DSMs are crazy. As for the drifting... you dont need any more than stock power... anything else is just for show. I drive with 245s in the back too.

Blatant self promotion: <a href='http://www.starquestclub.com/index.pl?b ... 6;start=17' target='_blank'>http://www.starquestclub.com/index.pl?b ... tart=17</a>
