Bolt in 4G64 Swaps... Any Interest?

Post by DJpowerHaus »

I was wondering what kind of demand there would be for a 2.4L wideblock 6 bolt with top mount log style turbo manifold and all other mods we've learned over the years. This would allow people to use the stock transmission, stock clutch, stock flywheel, unmodified firewall, trans tunnel crossmember and driveshaft.

This would use a 2.4L donor shortblock and a 2.0L longblock. I can source some of this locally and would be flexible about meeting up to get the stuff.

Bottom End Core:
Block
Crank,
Rear Seal
Main Caps
Engine Mount Brackets

Top End Timing Core:
Intake manifold
Head
Oil pump
Front timing parts and brackets

Modifications would include:
Wiseco Forged Pistons
Eagle Rods
ARP head studs
OEM 2.4L Timing Belt
New Gaskets
Crank inspected and magnufluxed
Remanufactured Modified Water pump
Front Exit Water Pipe with or without thermostat
Blocked off plate (low clearance for unmodified firewalls)
Front Engine Cam sensor pickup (front of head)
AN lines and adapters for turbo oil feed and drain
Cleaning, Machining and Paint
Surfaced block and Head for use with Metal head gasket
or save some $$ if block and head are really clean and use OEM composite gasket
New OEM engine mount bushings

Considering an Evolution Kit ala Group B :-D :
Top Mount Log Manifold
Turbo TBD
External wastegate if needed
Pre-tuned ECU
Heat shrunk and labeled harness
Forced Performance 3 cams
Crower Springs and Retainers
'90/VR4 External Oil Cooler and Lines

I wouldn't be able to offer any type of "oh shit I blew my engine up" replacement warranty but I'd offer support in the form of advice and experience. I have the room, tools and time to do this on the side but I'd like to make a few dollars on each engine. I could probably find some decent pricing on parts as well (depending on volume).

This could really benefit the group of we had multiple serious people that all wanted equally spec'd cars from the get go without the drawn out staged upgrades. Call it "Zero G Evolution Spec". Real savings would be in an included and pre-tuned fuel management system tuned to the group's agreed upon specifications. Zero G Evo Spec builders could then exchange information and maps if further development was done. Of course this would be a pretty expensive "kit" but it would save lots of time in R+D for those that want something badass SOON and are able to pay 1 (large) bill and know it will all work together.

How much would an engine setup be worth like this to you guys? The price will likely be a bigger number than most people want to see, but will include nearly everything for the swap all pre-assembled and cleaned for a price just above what it would cost you to do it yourself.... but by someone who's done it before.

Getting the engine bolted in is about 10% of the way there.
The next 80% can go quickly with help and skill.
That last 10% takes about as long as the 90% that came before it.

Sent an email to Fuel Injection Pro who have developed kits for the Starions in the past:
Dear FIP,

I am looking into the feasibility of offering a pre-assembled ECU for a kit I may be offering within the year. This would be used with the 4G64 Mitsubishi engine but may work on other displacement Mitsubishi 4G6x (Sirius) Engines.

For the last few years, with the help of dozens of swappers, I have developed a kit for swaps into Starions and Conquests. To offer a pre-wired pre-tuned drop in swap, we'd need some type of "spec" ECU along the lines of a repackaged MegaSquirt or equivalent.

This spec ECU would need to use:
* Stock DSM (Eclipse, Talon, Laser) Cam/Crank Sensor Input
* 2 Channel Wasted-Spark or Preferably 4 Channel Coil on Plug Ignition
* Multiport (4 injector) Fuel Injection
* Tunable Fuel and Spark Maps
* 3bar+ absolute MAP sensor
* 8,000rpm (2.4L), 9,000rpm (2.0L) to possibly 11,000rpm (2.1L) support

My tuner, Kevin Black (www.lugnutstuning.com), could develop several maps for whatever spec kit we put together.

Price would need to beat a DSMlink or AEM to be competitive.

Thanks,
Michael Bowman

As long as it takes most people to do a swap, they could just deposit money into a savings account every time they get the urge to buy a part. After a year of this they could buy the whole thing already put together. Would save lots of downtime and you wouldn't decide 6 months after you buy a part that you wanted to go a whole different direction.

I guess if people did that they wouldn't be able to post pictures of their soon be be running pile of parts 2 years before its running. :-D

That came off as sort of snide but it was meant to be funny.

That is why i have not posted any pics :D

i think the kit could cost 8k to 10k. maybe a little less depending on profit

I guess I'll break it down into components then.

I'm guessing:
Top End - Head mods for water pipes, valves springs, retainers, cams
Bottom End - Water pump modifications, timing components, 2.4L wideblock w/ Wiseco Pistons and stock or Eagle rods
Longblock - Above
ECU + Harness - Fuel Injection Pro ECU for plugging in to 4G63 sensors to Starion
