Custom Flywheel / Multiplate Clutches

Post by DJpowerHaus »

This thread is being created to discuss (have Old Colt tell us about) multiplate clutches.

Continuing from where we left off..

Is the Starion transmission going to handle a 6G72?

I was looking at small diameter bellhousings on ebay today:

Would be a nice way to lower the engine :-D How could we make something like this? I imagine one could make dozens of bolt patterns on an adapter like this.

Getting the engine bolted in is about 10% of the way there.
The next 80% can go quickly with help and skill.
That last 10% takes about as long as the 90% that came before it.

A weld up bellhousing is not a bad way to go. Part of the difficulty I run into on some of the swaps I get into is a good mounting for the starter.
The nice part of a weldup for small diameter stuff is to run a reverse starter. There are plenty of them available from Mazda, Subies and the Tilton style stuff.

The Starion box will hold up fine to the 6G72 in this application since it is a NA engine. Probably 240 - 250 Ft Lbs which is where a Starion starts out.
I would not go that way with a healthy 6G turbo, I would probably put a Supra box up to a stock 6G bellhousing.
I do have a 6 speed Richmond sitting here but they shift like a Peterbilt to me. I will leave it behind the Caddy 500 engine.

I have run out of room at the FTP that I store my pics at so I am trying another so this is kind of a test.

This is a closeup of a 6 bolt wheel modified for the 7 1/4 clutch.
nope did not work. Could you delete this for me. Thanks

What spline does that clutch have? Did you have to modify that to fit a Japanese transmission?

You buy the discs with most any spline you want, both or these are 1" 23. When you get into the small clutches, as in 4 1/2 stuff there are fewer stocked splines but the 5.5 has a good selection and the 7 1/4 you should be able to get anything. Mitsus are nice since they have very common spline sizes. Toyota, Nissan and Mazda boxes should not be an issue.
I have done a Miata gearbox onto an MGB engine and that was easy since I was able to redrill a late Chevy button style flywheel and buy the discs for the Mazda spline.
