Wideblock?

Just got back from the yard. I pulled a block from an '86 D50 auto and the block was........12.25 inches.

Crap, I guess all the D50 autos aren't wide.

That's a shame. Couldn't you have measured it before you pulled it?

Get that 2.4!

Yea, it's was hard to measure in place. The tape is bent and I wasn't sure how long the block from end to end should be. It didn't look right but I convinced myself it was OK as I was working under the assumption it was wide. I had not followed those recent threads about it and incorrectly thought all autos were wide.

All in all it was a nice cool sunny day outside away from my usual worries.
By the way, what is the distance from end to end on the wide block (not the bolt holes but actually from the end of the casting)?

14" according to my spacer plate.

I must not have been following those threads either. I thought if it was an auto it was wide.

What we need to do is compile a database of clues. Did you get all the info from the firewall plate? Surely the transmission code would be different from wide to narrow.

This is also a good time to start brainstorming easy ways, things to check in the junkyards.

The easiest way to measure at the yard, is to check the top 2 bellhousing bolts. The narrow block is about 4.5". The wide block is more like 5". You probably can't tell by just looking at them is it's wide or narrow. Too bad you don't live near me, There's a local yard with about 5 wide blocks. Bare blocks (or close to) are $75.
