JIGS ARE BIULT AND MACHINE WORK IS IN PROGRESS

Post by Bill Hincher »

HELLO FELLOW GEAR HEADS

Here are some more pics of the jig set up and the work going on with the bell housings as of 8/8/2006.

I want to start work right a way for the r 154 but I need some spec's, anybody got any drawings , or know where I can get them for the front of the trans?

Good morning, Bill. I didn't see where you had these for sale in the marketplace yet, but I sure would like one (or two)! They look great and thank you for taking this project on and seeing it to completion!

I have been asked about building the bell housing for the Turbo Supra trans by quite a few people, I am assumming this is the R 154 , from what I can gather, this trans has a longer input shaft then the W55 but , possibly the same bolt pattern on the face of it.
depending on the bolt pattern, it may be easier to provide a spacer plate to use the R154 , but then again, the throw out bearing collar may not be long enough to release the clutch, so a new collar may have to be made or the input shaft may need to be machined.

Lets light this candle!

The bolt pattern looks the same to me. I could get some measurments tomorrow. Not sure how accurate I can be. How should I measure it? Also, the input shaft is very long. I was needing about 2 inches of spacers plus the DSM bellhousing to make mine work. The collar for the TO bearing will need to be moved away from the tranny as well. Are these bellhousings for the narrow or wide block? I think $200 (think that was the price) is fair. I figured about $100 in aluminum plate alone to make a spacer plus cutting and time to fabricate. I'll PM you with measurements and some pictures tomorrow. Shouldn't be much harder than what you have now other than the TO collar.

from what you are saying, it would just be a matter of making two spacer plates, one for the trans to bell housing surface ( about two inches) and one for the throw out collar to transmission surface ( about two inches) to make my bellhousing work with that trans

Here's some pics. They're not that great, but should give you an idea of what is needed. I'll get some better measurements when I have a few more minutes. The adapter plate can bolt directly to the tranny, as the TO sleeve and such are one piece. I know South Bend Clutch was ready to make me a clutch for this application. All that is needed is the Toyota TO bearing (to match the sleeve) and a larger spline on the DSM friction disk. Let me know if there are any specific details you need on measurements.

R 154

Yeah jeff, it all makes sense, if in fact that bolt pattern is the same as the w-55 , then all that is needed is a two inch sandwich plate that would fit between my bellhousing and the R 154 trans. It would cover the complete face of the trans and fit under the original throw out bearing collar......it would space the trans backward and the throw out collar forward.....we would have to machine bearing bosses in the back of the plate to hold a input shaft seal and hold the bearings in place.........even if the bolt pattern wasnt right, the sandwich plate could bolt from both sides with studs .....just like wheel adaptors work..........with that much materail to work with, there is enough strength there for it.

[size=24]the difference between the W-55 and the R154[/

Post by Bill Hincher »

here is a pic to show the difference between the W-55 and the R154Image

the R 154 is in the back ground and the W-55 is in the fore front
the pic doesnt really show how big the difference is but my guess is the gears are about 20% wider and the bearings are about 20% bigger, its really more evident when you see them side by side
