water pump

Post by carguyf545 »

has anyone else had problems wtih the water pump fitting. my 4g63 water pump was no good, i didnt even try to make it fit. first i tried a water pump off of a 1.8 hyandia, i could only get two bolts in, the others would not line up. then i put the stock fwd 4g64 water pump on. it fit like it should have. i had to make my own gasket. the problem was the tensior bracket hit the water pump. i had to grind on th water pump and two bolt to make it fit.

i guess the question is, if the gaskets i have are for the 4g63 and they lined up with the 1.8 water pump, why didnt it fit. should you have to use the 4g64 dohc galant water pump for a perfect fit?

i found a dohc 4g64 in texas for 1,000.

Mine fit. I know my gasket set came with a bunch of different water pump gaskets. Maybe this is the reason.

Is that from the elusive 1994 DOHC 4G64 Galant? Isnt that a 7 bolt? Maybe that accounts for the difference.

Glad you found something that worked though. Hopefully if there are differences, we can get a list of what works.

Now that I think about it though. My water pump came from a Hyundai 1.8L engine. It bolted right onto my 91 MightyMax 4G64. The Hyundai unit matched my 1990 Eclipse 4G63 as well.

Getting the engine bolted in is about 10% of the way there.
The next 80% can go quickly with help and skill.
That last 10% takes about as long as the 90% that came before it.

the motor came for a summit. i used the 4g64 water pump, but where it bolts behind the tenisonr, the flange was thicker than the 1.8, but the 1.8 would not bolt up

the motor is a 6 bolt. and i thought it was a great lower end untill i tried to put the head on it and found out it had thrust bearing failure.

How about posting some pics, especially of the interference.
