Inspection

Post by tjc »

Today I passed inspection and emission in DC. This is an incredible feat. It took 6 hours of waiting in line. At first they would not inspect me b/c tail pipe was too short and I was "smoking". I had been idling in line for 2 hours and it smoked when I gunned but then no smoke when that cleared out but they still would not test me. So I drove home and welded on a tail pipe extension and went back (boy were they surprissed). This time I cut the engine off the entire time. Just started it to move up in line. Truck was quieter with new smaller tailpipe and that prob helped me in the end.
They finally agreed to test and they were sticklers. Even looked at the steering linkage. Definitly spent more time with my car than others.
Turns out I easily passed the tail pipe sniff test (91 ppm HC, limit 220). I had installed all the emisions controlls expecting all kinds of issues with having a swapped engine-turns out they never even new it was swapped b/c I passed the sniff. They were way more worried about the damn tail pipe and a chip in my windshield I had repaired already.

Anyway, I am writing all this b/c I am so relieved. It was torture having a year of work come down to something I couldn't control.

Now I am free to mod, tweak and tune for two years.

Sweet.

Move a few miles north and get it inspected and then you have FOREVER.... as long as the police dont call you out on something. Well, other than the tail pipe test, but any performance car should pass becuase its tuned properly ;-)

Getting the engine bolted in is about 10% of the way there.
The next 80% can go quickly with help and skill.
That last 10% takes about as long as the 90% that came before it.

Congrats as well,

Just shows that everything is running well. I checked my gas mileage yesterday when I filled up, and its getting 21mpg of city driving...and I driven it a little hard at times. I know I still have some tuning to do, and my last log indicated all the fuel trims running over 100, so my mpg may improve. I'm going to take it to a shop to be tuned completely just to be safe, I'm also going to try and see what it'll do on the dyno. I'm lucky to be in NC, they changed the laws in the past year so that all cars 1996 and new have to do emissions testing. All the rest are just safety inspections.
