RX7 trans....issues w/ pics.

Post by 1 Bad 68 »

Ok, got my plates built, motor is 2" forward and tonight was going to build the trans mount, only a few issues. Even with the block 2" forward I'm still going to have to cut my shifter hole out about 1.5" back. Also, the trans is at a huge angle because of the bellhousing and it pulls the engine down about 1" if not a little more. DJ, you have any pics of yours installed in the car? Heres mine, what do ya'll think?

Another solution to the shifter location is possibly locating a shorter tailshaft assembly from a Mazda MPV, B2600, or 929.

you really need to get the other part to those motor mounts. the metal part that surrounds the rest of it. it makes it so the mount cant move too much. that soft rubber will rip after a couple of hard launches.

Its amazing how identical your adapter plates look to mine. Even the counterbored holes.

As for the tranmission stuff.... Mine was tilted just like yours (the shifter is straight though). Your best bet is to toss the stock transmission crossmember and make one out of some steel. I have a nice profile that works great with Series 5 transmissions. Series 4 are slightly different but are pretty easy to come up with. This page has some pictures of how I did it: http://projectzerog.com/rx7transmissions.shtml

It looks like the top of your tranmission is tight to the driver side of the tunnel. mine does that too. Sucks about shifter placement. Not sure what the best solution for that is. Not sure how easy the tailhousings are to find but they dont look like the best solution. Probably should just cut up the center consol a little.

Clean up that engine bay! Looks a little juicy too.

You can weld in some metal stuff to the mounts to get rid of the mount ripping problems (mine ripped after about 6 months.)

Getting the engine bolted in is about 10% of the way there.
The next 80% can go quickly with help and skill.
That last 10% takes about as long as the 90% that came before it.

so how much power can the rx7 trans hold?
i am shooting for 500whp and 600whp on nitrous.
i am thinking about using this car in pinks so, i don't want it to brake. And i will not go with the turbo350.

I doubt it will hold that much power for too long. Look on RX7 boards for that answer. I wont have an answer for hopefully a long long time.

I think the RX7 tranny should hold the power you're looking at. Really, that's one of the things in a TII that don't need to be upgraded.

The TII tranny is even stronger than the FD tranny. And if it breaks, there's always the $$Guru dogbox$$.
