Hello all,
I am a noob so haze as you will. Went to a wrecking yard today 1 hour before closing and blazed through the carnage found some potential Diamond Stars in the rough. One that struck my eye was a Hyundai Elantra '95. Engine bay was kosher and no vultures picking at it yet (excluding me potentially). Going back in the next day to look it over thoroughly; miles, Trans. type, etc.). Curious as to any success stories in wrecking yard finds and how it turned out in the long run. Also, found a local machinist that would 'mic and magnaflux the parts for FREE! Plan on giving him something for his time though. So, for a noob looking for something to wrench on and gain experience for a future swap what do you all think?
They charge $500 main block and $500 for trans...need to ask if this includes wiring harness/ECU and with a 15 day warranty return if not working (sounds like a bait to me but whatever). Found a few other 4g63 models but the hyundai seems to be one of the better ones topically.
Noob needs some veteran knowledge on pick and pull engines

$500 is too much in my opinion unless they're including all wiring and accessories. You could probably find a running car on Craigslist for $500. There isn't much need to magnaflux a 4G63 unless it's beat to hell. They are tough motors and I haven't seen one with cylinder cracks or major issues to the block. The bearings, rods or crank would likely break first.
The Elantra likely has lived a plush lifestyle since I believe all were automatics. Just open the oil fill or pull the valve cover to check for oil issues. Make sure you understand which 4G63 you're getting. I'm not entirely sure if Hyundai went with 7-bolt blocks in 95 like Mitsu did. I it's easy to tell which head you have by looking for the cam angle sensor.
There's no reason not to get the motor unless something looks out of place or damaged. If you're planning to build it anyway, then just make sure it hasn't been rebuilt previously by some hack.
Do lots of reading on here and check the VFAQ for more info on this motor.
