1971 Datsun 521 (swap and progress pics)

So I've had this Datsun for about a year and a half, it's got the stock 1.6 liter engine. It's pretty slow. I came across this engine for a decent price. I was told its a 4g64 dohc but I'm not sure, if anyone could reconize if it's a 4g63 or 4g64 I would appreciate it,

I got a spare 5speed 1970's Datsun 240Z manual transmission I want to hook up to it,

All I currently have is just the motor, I know I need an exhaust manifold and probly the computer, if you know of something I might need please let me know.

So after cleaning up the block I found the stamp, and it's a 4g63

When I bought it I took off the valve cover and everything looked fine, but the dip stick showed that there was no oil in the engine, so after I got home I popped the oil pan off, and I got some thick chocolate milk looking stuff in the pan

After seeing the chocolate milk oil I hoped it was just a head gasket repair, so I popped the head off and saw this

Sucks about the motor. On a brighter note, this should be basically the same swap that I'm doing to the 510. Check out my build. Hopefully it will answer some questions for you.

Did you find the cause for water in the cylinders?

It could have been a head gasket issue, cracked head, etc. The block may clean up. Carbon buildup on top of the pistons is pretty common, epsecially on a stock motor that wasn't "maintained" that well. Even a maintained motor with some miles on it will have some buildup.

If it were me, I would look for the cause of water leakage, clean the block up (flip it upside down, thoroughly clean out the cylinders and clean it out with seafoam/WD40/etc.), clean the crank case out, and remove all the rod/main bearing caps and inspect for damage. If the crank journals and bearings look good, lube it up with assembly lube, put all the caps back on and put the motor back together.

If I'm not mistaken, you have a NT motor, so I wouldn't dump a ton of money in it. I have saved quite a few "stock" motors by just doing a thorough inspection and not taking apart the bottom end. 4G63 motors are very durable and unless you have a hole in the block or a spun bearing, chances are it's still good.

Yea turns out the dude I bought it off took off the head and never Bolted it back on. And the engine sat out in the rain for a few days. He said when he took the head off there was no water.
